Job summary

The Children and Young People's Improving Access to Psychological Therapies programme (CYP IAPT) is a service transformation programme delivered by Health Education England and partners that aims to improve existing children and young people's Mental Health Services (CYP MHS) working in the community. CYP Wellbeing Practitioner training will benefit from being integrated fully within CYP MHS and linked to the CYP IAPT Collaborative, which brings a valuable organisational infrastructure.

We are looking to recruit a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Specialist working as part of the Children's Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP) service (1.0WTE) who will have experience and a keen interest in emotional regulation and working closely with other professionals to develop and work with young people in our GP Youth Clinic Lewisham.

The CWP GP Youth Clinic Pilot Programme consists of Child Wellbeing Practitioners, and Supervisor providing a range of time-limited evidence based interventions in the form of low intensity support and guided self-help to young people who demonstrate mild/moderate:

  • Anxiety (primary and secondary school age)
  • Low mood (adolescents)
  • Common behavioural difficulties (working with parents for under 8s).

    Your role will include supporting service development and leadership to establish the team further and expand its reach within the community.

Main duties of the job

To provide clinical supervision and consultation as appropriate, functioning as a specialist in CYPIAPT principles and practice for the supervision of Child Well Being Practitioners.

  • To provide a specialist CAMHS service to the children and young people referred to the GP Youth Clinic and CWP team including specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes.
  • To contribute to enabling other staff, service users and carers from diverse backgrounds to flourish by working to create a psychologically safe environment.
  • To undertake service evaluation, audit and research.
  • To work as an autonomous professional within BPS/HCPC/other appropriate professional association guidelines and codes of conduct, and guided by principles and policies or procedures of the service, taking responsibility for interpreting policies within defined parameters.
  • To agree outcomes/results with clinical/professional lead and to decide how they are best
  • May have Professional leadership role for one of the following: nursing, OT, art or drama therapy.

Clinical Specialist responsibilities to the Team

  • With senior colleagues, evaluate and review the therapeutic strategic outcomes for the teams and set aims and objectives and the monitor practice to assure quality standards of care.
  • Share day to day responsibility for the quality of delivery of clinical care with the Team Manager, consultant staff and other colleagues. Supervise case work across the team and contribute on the clinical performance of team members at appraisal.
  • Establish and maintain evidence-based practice including systemic and other evidence based treatments.
  • Support the service lead in recommending the allocation of clinical work and operating an agreed system of caseload management. Provide clinical supervision to members of the team, which would include assisting them in planning their workload and in revising their care plans for individual patients.
  • Manage day to day clinical risks and clinically advise team members on courses of action. Ensure that team members follow systems of safe practice and that operational policies are adhered to.
  • Ensure that all recording and reporting of client contact is accurate, up to date and of good quality and within CAMHS, SLAM & professional requirement standards of record keeping. Ensure that data and clinical information individual on clinical activity is collected and entered onto ePJS by all team members.
  • Contribute to the effective functioning of the team and service through chairing/leading relevant meetings, taking responsibilities within the clinical service as appropriate and negotiated with the service lead.
  • Take a clear role in the induction new team members. Ensure that conditions of service and HR procedures are followed within the Team. Carry out line management supervision and minimum of annual appraisals in place for all team members as requested.
  • Ensure that the staff and service take account of service user views in their day to day practice and are respectful of diversity.
  • Implement new service protocols or service interventions based on experience, audit and development and advise the wider service on these.
  • Assure prompt recruitment to vacancies and the induction of new staff to all posts within the team, according to relevant procedures.

Team, including monitoring of annual leave, staff activity, and take prompt action regarding concerns in staff performance in conjunction with the Section manager.   • Monitor and improve the standard of service delivery of the team via through the implementation of clinical governance procedures such as audit and the development of protocols. Introducing new clinical practices based on research evidence and other evaluation work with the agreement of the Service lead, Clinical Colleagues, Lead Clinician and Service manager.
  • Ensure that the team is a good quality learning environment for CAMHS trainees.
  • Oversee trainee placements and offering supervision and mentorship as appropriate
  • Attend and represent CAMHS at meetings relating to the work of child and adolescent mental health services as appropriate within and outside the service.
  • Ensure that any legislation and statutory requirements are complied with and implemented throughout the team/section.
  • Deputise for the Service Lead or other Clinical Specialists/Consultants in case supervision, assessment and review clinics during periods of Annual leave or sickness and regularly deputise on extra agreed duties within your team/section.

  • Assume responsibility for own case list and case management of children, adolescents and families who are determined to be at low, medium or high risk.
  • Provide primary CAMH assessments, other specialist assessments and risk assessments to identify and diagnose the cause of emotional and behavioural problems in children and young people.
  • Formulate care plans, based on the primary CAMHS assessment. Design, write and share a copy of the care plan with children, young people and their carers.
  • Carry out the care plan using evidence-based models of psychological and psychotherapeutic interventions .
  • Participate and lead in joint complex assessments with other disciplines and other agencies and provide reports for referrers, families and other agencies as required, including 'witness of fact' court reports where appropriate.
  • Assess safeguarding issues for each case and refer concerns to Child Protection teams.
