Job summary
The post holder will work as a dual diagnosis/substance misuse nurse specialist within the Mental Health Liaison Team (MHLT) at University Hospital Lewisham to provide dual diagnosis/substance misuse expertise and facilitate co-ordinated service delivery for people aged 18+ with suspected co-existing mental health and substance misuse issues. The post holder will help address many of the co-morbid drug/substance misuse related issues that can, in some circumstances, lead to delay in assessment times.The post holder will promote high standards of assessment and treatment of people of anyone aged 18+, including older adults, with suspected or co-existing mental health and substance misuse problems, based on the best available evidence, within the expected response times set out for urgent referrals from the ED and inpatient wards.
Main duties of the job
- Provide clinical expertise and support in assessment, care planning and the delivery and evaluation of interventions to people with co-morbid mental health, physical health and substance misuse problems.
- Act as a dual diagnosis resource to the MHLT, accessing and disseminating up to date information on local/national guidance, research and audit and promoting implementation of same.
- Communicate regularly with partner agencies involved in the care/treatment of people with dual diagnosis. This will include agencies that provide substance misuse treatment, acute physical health care, housing, criminal justice, education, and employment for this group of clients.
- Use DATIX effectively and support teams to enhance data collection and up to date reporting of incidents relating to substance misuse.

The Mental Health Liaison Service provides a 24-hour service, 7 days a week to Lewisham Hospital offering urgent assessment and intervention to patients attending the Emergency Department and those admitted to the inpatient wards. The service works closely with UHL staff in a variety of medical settings.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Senior Psychiatric Liaison Practitioner to join the Lewisham Liaison Service within our busy, multi-disciplinary Mental Health Liaison Service.
You will join the team at an exciting time as we are currently developing our service in line with NHS England standards according to the CORE 24 Model for Mental Health Liaison Services.
It is essential that the post holder is flexible in working hours as the team operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You must have excellent clinical skills, be able to demonstrate an ability to complete comprehensive mental state examinations, thoroughly assess risk, formulate safe and effective risk management plans and document this clearly. You should have experience of mental health emergencies, and crisis care in a variety of settings including community.
You must also be experienced and motivated, flexible and be able to show initiative in an environment which can be fast paced and pressured, Clinical supervision can be provided along with excellent training opportunities.
