Job summary

We are currently looking to recruit a nurse prescriber (NMP) or someone willing to undertake the training to support delivery of our service at Pier Road Project (community drug and alcohol treatment service for the London Borough of Bexley). South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust is the lead for the contract and deliver's the service in conjunction with two partners Humankind and St Giles Trust. The service offers a range of interventions including but not limited to individual and group work, harm reduction intervention's, carer's support, education, training and employment advice. Treatment is personalised and targeted to enable individuals to address their needs and move on in their recovery.

As a service we pride ourselves on being a friendly and supportive. Staff are actively encouraged to access training and further their professional development .There is the expectation in this role that NMP training will be undertaken, if not already a qualified NMP.

Bexley Drug and Alcohol treatment Services form part of a larger Addictions Clinical Academic Group who are responsible for the delivery of specialist and community substance misuse services across several South East London boroughs including Bexley, Lambeth, Richmond and Wandsworth. We are also closely associated with the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College and Kings Health partners Academic health sciences Centre and this provides us with access to extensive research and training opportunities.

Main duties of the job

To deliver non-medical prescribing for alcohol and drug clients, this will include provision of clinics for community alcohol detoxes within the service, also delivery of nurse prescribing clinics for drug clients.

To co-ordinate recovery focused care packages for a defined caseload of clients with substance misuse issues. These clients will have multiple needs that require a high level of input both from the multi-disciplinary team and across multiple partnership agencies. Care packages will include delivering a combination of physical health, psychosocial and recovery interventions to assist the clients in meeting their needs.

The post holder will also take responsibility, be expected to take the lead on and develop specific specialised areas, be actively involved in any research that is undertaken and work closely with the rest of the team to ensure efficient operation of the service on a daily basis.

About us

Slam Addictions Community Drug and Alcohol services work in partnership with other statutory and voluntary substance misuse agencies at a borough wide level. Community services provide a range of treatment interventions for clients with substance misuse problems including pharmacological, physical, psychosocial and recovery interventions. The service places a keen emphasis on working in partnership with clients and carers to enable them to define their own pathways to recovery. The focus is empowerment; through assisting clients to develop new or add to their current skills we enable them to attain recovery.

Services are provided by a multi-disciplinary team comprising of Doctors, Nurses, Substance Misuse Workers, Social Workers, Psychologists, Administrators and Peer Advisors.

Group and individual treatments include harm reduction interventions, pharmacological interventions, psychosocial interventions, preparation for and referral to inpatient and residential services, health education and interventions, and recovery interventions.

The services are committed to improving knowledge, skills and ongoing development and training of staff is supported and expected. Innovation and the development of evidence-based health care through research is highly valued and services regularly support and participate in research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To carry out comprehensive individual assessments of clients physical, psychological, mental health and social situation. This information then forms the basis on which an individualised recovery plan is formulated for each client. The planning will be for the whole client journey and will include construction of aftercare plans and there follow up.

  • To be responsible for the clinical care of a defined caseload on an individual basis with complex drug/alcohol related problems ensuring clinical care is delivered in accordance with Trust policies, national guidance and evidence based practice.

  • To be involved in the development and monitoring of standards of care, clinical audit, research and outcomes to enhance and develop good clinical practice.

  • Attend meetings and case conferences as appropriate with client, carers and other professionals; this includes child protection conferences, CPAs, Panel meetings, multi-agency meetings etc. Where necessary, data would need to be collated and reports supplied.

  • To regularly review Recovery plans with clients and ensure that goals are SMART and cover all relevant domains of treatment. To ensure that all activity and information is entered in the clinical not system, relevant service databases and within time frames specified. To comply fully with all NDTMS and trust data requirements.

  • To dispense medication, administer vaccinations, injections and undertake testing. To deliver physical health screening and interventions as relevant to clients needs. (Smoking cessation, sexual health, contraception etc.)

  • To develop positive working relationships and advocate for clients with a wide range of statutory and voluntary organisations to include GPs, Community Mental Health Teams, General Hospitals, criminal justice system and appropriate others. To be involved in the development and implementation of new practice, policies and guidelines.

  • To mentor and supervise junior staff / students / peer mentors where appropriate.

  • To lead on delivering groups, coordinating satellite clinics and developing specialist areas, service user involvement, policies and guidance as required. To participate and cover specific duties, triage sessions as required. To be involved in the day to day running of the service ensuring that all clients needs are met. To cover senior staff where necessary. A high level of flexibility is required, and post-holders will be expected to carry out tasks or move to work in other areas of the partnership as required.
