Job summary

We are delighted to advertise a substantive, 10-PA consultant psychiatrist post in Liaison Psychiatry working with two specialist teams: Persistent Physical Symptoms (PPS) Unit based at Maudsley Hospital, (6 PAs) and Kings College Hospital within a new cancer psychology team (4 PAs).

The Persistent Physical Symptoms Research and Treatment Unit set up over 20 years ago, specialised in Chronic Fatigue and ME. In 2015 the service underwent transformation to deliver treatment for Persistent Physical Symptoms, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic pain and physical symptoms in long term conditions.

The team provide expert medical / biopsychosocial assessments. They take a collaborative approach offering CBT or Activity Management. Therapists can also provide home-based treatment for the severely affected. The PPS Unit has a strong record of research, teaching and service development.

The Cancer Psychology Service is a new service and provides opportunities to help shape and grow the speciality at King's. The service offers psychological expertise and support across all points of the cancer care pathway. It offers support to all cancer tumour group patients and their families/carers at King's and their care teams.

Interventions include individual and group psychological therapy, family support, workshops and training sessions, and supervision, advice and consultation to multidisciplinary colleagues.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed consultant psychiatrist to work across mental and physical health in specialist settings, providing clinical leadership and working closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team. The post combines two specialist areas of liaison psychiatry with a shared focus on supporting patients with long term physical health conditions and symptoms

Job responsibilities

Clinical duties of the post:

  • To provide enthusiastic, and flexible, joint clinical leadership and consultant input for the PPS service alongside other consultants and the team managers/clinical service leads.
  • To work closely with the lead cancer psychologist and as a part of the cancer psychology service to develop the direction of the service, including offering advice about mental health and physical health treatment contra-indications, mental health related side effects of cancer treatments, etc. and acting as a key link between cancer psychology and mental health services
  • To provide assessments and treatment in these outpatient services
  • To take consultant responsibility for PPS and cancer psychology patients, assessing or supervising assessment of patients and devising or helping to devise appropriate treatment plans and medication regimes and providing prompt medical response for those patients under your direct care and advising and work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team
  • To agree case allocation for the cancer psychology service with the psychology team during the cancer psychology MDT meetings
  • To record and audit appropriate clinical outcome measures for the cancer psychology service showing contribution to improved cancer patient experience
  • Contribute to review and audit of data collection (e.g., % of cancer psychology patients referred to psychiatry, volume of patients assessed by psychiatry service, volume of patients discussed in MDT)
  • To undertake responsibilities as an Approved Clinician under the Mental Health Act 1983 as needed.
  • To ensure excellence in the provision of medical and psychiatric assessments to all referred patients to the service including risk assessment protocols as directed by SLaM.
  • To ensure clinical activities are documented on the Trust electronic record system (ePJS/EPR) and assist in the collection of clinical outcome data.
  • To work flexibly with other teams across SLaM and other mental trusts, to ensure smooth transitions of care when needed.
  • To communicate clearly and effectively with staff of all major disciplines concerned with the provision of mental health care.
  • To appropriately signpost/refer onward those individuals who do not meet threshold for these services but present with other mental health needs
  • To develop strong working relationships with stakeholders, including local GPs, other teams at SLaM and other mental trusts, Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Kings Health Partners staff, and with the voluntary sector, to ensure good coordination of care.
  • To ensure excellence in the delivery of evidence-based treatments.
  • To act as a source of support, advice and information to current or prospective patients and their carers, referrers, team members and other professionals.
  • In conjunction with the Service Lead and other Team Consultants the post holder will help to represent the team at Directorate, CAG and care pathway meetings.
  • To provide reciprocal cross cover / Section 12 cover for specialist outpatient Consultant psychiatrists when they are on leave.
  • To keep up to date with key developments in Liaison Psychiatry / PPS / cancer psychology research and treatment
  • To deliver Service Line management of trainees in psychiatry (including special interest trainees) if any are working within the service and working with team leaders to do so
