Job summary

We are looking for a Band 6 or Band 7 clinician to join the Southwark Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT) Service.

A suitable Band 6 clinician would be someone who wishes to develop their knowledge, experience and psychological therapy practice within the MBT Service. Upon completion of the MBT practitioner qualification, within 12-18 months, trained through Health Education England you will move onto a Band 7. See Band 6 job specification for essential criteria. Please make it clear in your supporting statement which post you would like to be considered for.

A suitable Band 7 clinician would be someone with post graduate education, knowledge, experience and existing psychological therapy skills / qualifications to join us in the Southwark MBT Service. If you do not hold MBT Practitioner status you will be expected to gain this within 12-18 months of being in post. You will be provided MBT training through Health Education England. See Band 7 job specification for essential criteria. Please make it clear in your supporting statement which post you would like to be considered for.

The post holder will deliver MBT to individuals and groups. In addition, the role will involve developing relationships with Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) colleagues, offering in-reach and assisting CMHT colleagues with their psychological interventions as part of the developing stepped care model.

Main duties of the job

You will need to be able to work as part of a committed and coherent team who are consistent in their MBT approaches. You will need to be open to share the stress of working in this field.

You will take part in the screening of MBT referrals, conduct MBT assessments, develop MBT formulations, co-facilitate MBT introductory (MBTi) groups, offer 1:1 MBT to a designated caseload and co-facilitate MBT groups. You will offer follow up MBT sessions upon patients completing the up to 18-month intensive outpatient programme.

You will be part of the weekly MBT duty rota and chairing of daily MBT feedback meetings. You will take part in weekly MBT clinical meetings and 3-4 monthly MBT patient reviews. You will need to carry out and monitor clinical outcome measurements via a system called POD. You will be expected to join weekly MBT on model supervision, weekly dynamic based supervision and monthly management / individual supervision.

About us

The Southwark MBT Service is based in the Maudsley Hospital (Trust Headquarters). The Maudsley is located at Denmark Hill less than 5 minutes from the train station (zone 2) and is within walking distance from the beautiful green spaces of Ruskin park and the vibrant high-street that offers great shopping opportunities and with a wide range restaurants.

The Southwark MBT Service is based in Middle House on the first floor. We have several individual / office spaces and larger rooms to conduct groups and meetings. There is a kitchen area to make refreshments and meal preparation.

We are small-medium sized team comprising of a variety of individuals who have an interest and expertise in working with personality disorder. Clinicians hold a core mental health qualification and additional psychotherapy / psychology training. All staff are expected to hold or be working towards MBT practitioner status. We have a dedicated Clinical Service Lead / Psychotherapist / MBT Practitioner and Consultant Psychiatrist / Medical Psychotherapist / MBT Practitioner who provides the team and patients with medical and psychotherapeutic expertise. We also have trainee Psychiatrists with us on rotation. The Team is supported by an MBT Administrator.

An engaging individual who has an interest in personality disorder. You need to have a curious and not knowing stance. Monitoring you own understanding and correcting misunderstandings is key. You need to be able to challenge unwanted beliefs and be able to intervene when mentalizing collapses and acknowledge when mentalizing is going well. You need to have an awareness or willingness to learn about attachment and transference in relation to you as the therapist and be able to make use of countertransference.

Band 6 Key Responsibilities:

  • To support the provision of Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT) treatment principles to people with a primary diagnosis of Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder both in group and individual settings.
  • To participate in the delivery of MBT to the basic mentalizing skill level.
  • To demonstrate through case presentation and daily clinical meetings, the implementation of the MBT model to all clinical work and reflective practice groups.
  • To demonstrate the quality of interventions through documentation of the care pathway steps into treatment, during treatment and away from treatment.
  • In conjunction and with support of colleagues facilitate regular clinical reviews of the implementation of the treatment plan, involving the client, other professionals involved and their family / any other relevant person.
  • To undertake, document and share with relevant professionals and carers a risk assessment and risk management plans for clients.
  • In conjunction and with support of colleagues, reviewing the assessment and planning of care when there are complex adult or child safeguarding issues and completing risk assessment and care planning where there is risk to others or to self, for instance where there may be severe and repeated self-injurious behaviour.
  • To work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary MBT team actively supporting the maintenance of the mentalizing milieu, its therapeutic boundaries and the safety of all within the service. This will include from time to time being the duty contact person for patients requiring additional or crisis support on a day to day basis.
  • To work with the team, making use of the team support and supervision and risk management structures to ensure safe and effective care for this patient group.
  • To participate in stepped care regarding evidenced based treatments for this client group. This will also involve establishing and maintaining professional collaborative communication that is experienced by others in the CMHT as helpful, supportive and clear.

  • To ensure own Continuing Professional Development in line with HCPC / NMC and Social Work England and Trust Personal Development Plan requirements.
