Job summary

The post-holder will work within the Lewisham CWP established programme, providing high volume low-intensity interventions, consisting of a range of Guided Self Help (GSH) self-management courses to Children and Young People (and their families) experiencing mild to moderate anxiety, depression and challenging behaviour.

The post-holder will carry out telephone and face to face assessments and guided self-help interventions. There will be opportunities to pursue special interests including community-based projects, workshops and groups.

The post-holder will work with people of different cultural backgrounds and ages, using interpreters when necessary and should be committed to equal opportunities.

The post-holder will be based at Lewisham Park in the Borough of Lewisham.

This post affords the opportunity for involvement in and contribution to service development.

Please note that the role will have an opportunity to extend to a permanent role. We welcome newly qualified CWP/MHST to apply for the role.

Main duties of the job

The CWP Programme consists of Child Wellbeing Practitioners and Supervisors providing a range of time-limited evidence-based interventions in the form of low-intensity support and guided self-help to young people who demonstrate mild/moderate:

  • Anxiety (primary and secondary school-age)
  • Low mood (adolescents)
  • Common behavioural difficulties (working with parents for under 8s)

This is a borough of high social and psychological needs with considerable cultural diversity. This and partner agencies provide assessments and treatments to an ethnically diverse group of clients, where English may not be their first language, who present with a wide range of common mental illnesses at varying levels of severity. Many clients present with multiple problems including social, housing and employment issues.

This post is a busy one, requiring excellent organisation, flexibility and creativity, as well as clinical skills.

The post holder will be supported by regular case management supervision from an experienced practitioner providing an opportunity to develop clinically and reflect on and share the experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical: To accept referrals via agreed protocols within the service and develop courses of Guided Self-Help. To assess and support children and young people with common mental health problems in improving resilience and self-management. To undertake person-centred interviews which identify areas where the person wishes to see change and make an accurate assessment of risk to self and others, both face to face and on the telephone. Make decisions on the suitability of new referrals, adhering to the service's protocols, actively signposting unsuitable clients onto a better-suited service or back to the referrer as necessary. Work closely with other members of the team ensuring appropriate step-up and step-down arrangements are in place. To educate and involve family members and others as necessary.
  • Provide a range of information and support for evidence-based high-volume-low-intensity evidence-based GSH courses. This work may be face to face, telephone or via other media. Assess and integrate issues surrounding the school and social life into the process of the course. Operate at all times from an inclusive values base that promotes wellbeing and recognises and respects diversity.
  • Adhere to an agreed activity contract relating to the overall number of client contacts offered and sessions carried out per week in order to minimise waiting times and ensure CWP delivery remains accessible and convenient. To attend multi-disciplinary meetings relating to referrals or clients, where appropriate.
  • To complete all requirements relating to data collection within the service. To keep up to date, coherent and accurate records of all clinical activity in line with service protocols and use these records and Patient Rated and Clinician Rated Outcome data in clinical decision making.

  • Prepare and present clinical information for all clients on their caseload to case management supervisors within the service on an agreed and scheduled basis, in order to ensure safe practice and the clinical governance obligations of the worker, supervisor and service are delivered. Respond to and implement supervision suggestions by supervisors in practice. Engage in and respond to personal development supervision to improve competencies and clinical practice.
  • Professional: Ensure the maintenance of standards of practice according to the employer and training provider, and keep up to date on new recommendations/guidelines set by the King's College, University College, NICE. Ensure that client confidentiality is protected at all times. Be aware of, and keep up to date with advances in the low-intensity treatment of common mental health problems.
  • Ensure clear objectives are identified, discussed and reviewed with the supervisor on a regular basis as part of continuing professional development. Participate in individual performance reviews and respond to agreed objectives. Keep up to date records in relation to Continuing Professional Development and ensure a personal development plan maintains up to date specialist knowledge of the latest GSH / low intensity theoretical and CWP Pilot models/developments. Attend relevant conferences/workshops in line with identified professional objectives.
  • General: To contribute to the development of best practices within the service. To maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and procedures in relation to Mental Health and Social Care and Education Services.

  • Holds a recognised qualification to work as a Children Wellbeing Practitioner/ Education Wellbeing Practitioner

Desirable

  • A second class honours degree or higher in Psychology.
  • Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of conducting telephone based/online/ face to face assessments with clients to determine the nature of their psychological difficulties, determine appropriate step of intervention and assess for/manage risk.
  • Demonstrates experience of delivering brief, evidence based interventions for mild - moderate anxiety disorders and/or depression, to children and families(18 yrs below), within a CBT framework.
  • Experience of offering groups for people with anxiety or depression
  • Experience of working with social service or other CAMHS teams
