Job summary

About the team:

The Mental Health Assessment Unit (MHAU) is a temporary service created in response to the Covid-19 crisis and ongoing emergency department pressures for the local population of Croydon. The unit is staffed primarily by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) unit based staff and the SLaM psychiatric liaison team.

The service consists of a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and lived experience staff. The service has been created to relieve pressure on the Emergency Department (ED) at Croydon University Hospital which has historically been present and also to assist in providing capacity for a surge in emergency medical cases caused by Covid-19. This is achieved by providing a diversionary assessment space for patients with mental health problems who would otherwise have been seen in the ED but have no concurrent acute physical health concern.

This area will provide collaborative and timely care to patients requiring mental health care and treatment, in line with National emergency care access standards.

In keeping with our obligations under the new Coronavirus Regulations 2021 in relation to Care Home visits, the successful candidate will be required to provide evidence of full vaccination status against Covid-197

Main duties of the job
