Job summary

The Channi Kumar Mother and Baby Unit is a 13 bedded unit committed to providing evidence based treatments for mothers with mental health problems and their babies. We aim to reduce risk and promote the relationship between a mother and her baby, which prepares them for a lasting return to the community. We offer a holistic treatment programme and encourage the involvement of partners in this process.

Our service is for women who develop a mental illness or have a relapse of serious mental illness during pregnancy, and women who have developed postnatal depressions, post-partum psychosis or have had a relapse of serious mental illness following the birth of their baby.

We also provide a unique parenting assessment service for local and national authorities across the United Kingdom. We undertake assessment of women or couples and their infant, where there is a potential risk of safeguarding issues arising from the parents' mental health problems.

Main duties of the job

As a primary nurse on the unit you will have responsibility for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care given to mothers and babies on the unit and ensure records associated with this process are maintained.

This may include the co-ordination of care of service users liaising with other members of the multidisciplinary team where necessary. The successful candidate will regularly co-ordinate shifts and administer prescribed medication.

The successful candidate will carry out nursing procedures to a standard that ensures safe and effective care, and complies with The Nursing and Midwifery Council's Code of Professional Conduct. The successful candidate will act as a role model for junior staff and students and be proactive in ongoing iservice development and improvement.

There is an expectation that the successful candidate will facilitate service user involvement in all aspects of service delivery.

As a new member of the team you will receive a robust induction which will include supernumerary time to familiarise yourself with the work of the unit, your colleagues, the ward timetable and to complete mandatory training appropriate for your role.

We recognise what a challenging time this is for everyone at present in the context of the current coronavirus pandemic and would like to reassure you that we will welcome applications from all including those currently having to self isolate for a prolonged period.
