Interface Geriatrics Research Registrars or Senior House Officers (SHOs)

CNWL seeks a motivated, self-directed and enthusiastic medical doctor at senior house officer (SHO) level, with full GMC registration and an interest in geriatric medicine, to join the team at St. Pancras hospital and community services in the London Borough of Camden.

This 12-month clinical post aims to providing broad experience in community services for the care of older, frailer people.

The post holder will practise rotationally across an innovative suite of interface geriatric services, bridging traditional primary and secondary care, including Camden virtual ward, UCLH front door frailty liaison, St Pancras inpatient rehabilitation, pre-hospital London Ambulance Service single point of access and Camden community rapid response. Our department is proud to be academic leaders in research and teaching, with formal links to University College London (UCL) Institute for Health Informatics (IHI) and UCL medical school.

The post holder will be encouraged to augment their clinical experience with active participation in our ongoing ageing research programme, with the group's central interests ranging from modelling of acute illness in older frailer patients, namely pathophysiology of delirium, data science, population epidemiology to health services research. We hope to provide a foundational platform for any aspiring future geriatricians.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will join a rotational pattern of other junior trainees and geriatric registrars, who will each spend one month rotations between Camden Virtual Ward and St Pancras inpatient rehabilitation unit (SPRU). Your working pattern will be 5 days per week, with specific duties dependent on the current service. For example, during their virtual ward rotation, the post-holder will be expected to actively take part in daily multidisciplinary team meetings, liaise with health professionals to generate a holistic management plan as well as performing home visits. During the inpatient part of their rotation, ward rounds and weekly MDTs, as well as the care of medically deteriorating patients, will be required. This arrangement offers a broad range of experience of general and geriatric medicine, managing long-term conditions and rehabilitation. There are no weekend or evening out of hours commitments during this post.The post-holder will be allocated a clinical supervisor in Geriatric Medicine. The post-holder are expected to participate in the education and training of undergraduate doctors, audit and quality improvement activities, as well as be active in local governance infrastructure.

We hold grants from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), and our primary research focus is on characterising acute illness in the context of frailty, specifically delirium and its longitudinal outcomes. However, we are equally flexible in tailoring plans to suit the interests of the successful applicant.
