Job responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to:

• Provide clinical care to patients and those important to them within South Camden, and Islington (and NE Westminster) The post holder will work closely with the Clinical Nurse Specialists and other colleagues in the team, as well as colleagues within the wider service and throughout the Trust, and will liaise with professionals within the community - GPs, Community Nursing and other specialist Teams (e.g. Respiratory, Learning difficulties, Heart Failure, Dementia etc), and within St Pancras Hospital (St Pancras Rehabilitation Unit, Camden Virtual ward etc) as well as neighbouring hospitals as needed.
• Provide clinical cross cover for SPC consultants in the service who work in UCLH as needed.
• Work closely with the clinical lead for the service, as well as the leads for the community and hospital team.
• Represent Palliative Care at relevant clinical and strategic meetings (e.g. NCL Specialist Palliative Care provider group, PallE8, GP Multidisciplinary meetings, Cross community meetings)
• Attend and contribute to the community specialist palliative care MDT meeting each week.
• Provide clinical supervision and educational supervision to trainees working within the team, as well as educational support and teaching to members of the nursing team undertaking advanced practice (e.g non-medical prescribing, physical assessment) and to visitors to the team.

Hospital:

The purpose of this post is to provide clinical care and leadership within the UCLH Palliative Care Service as follows:

• Provide clinical care to patients within UCLH. The post holder will work closely with the with the inpatient lead for this team, Dr Jane Neerkin and inpatient lead clinical nurse specialist, Emily Anderson.
• Support Clinical Nurse Specialists and other colleagues in the team, as well as other colleagues within the wider service and throughout the Trust,liaising with professionals in the community as needed, such as GPs, community palliative care teams and community nurses.
• Work closely with the clinical lead for the service, Dr Rasha Al-Qurainy, as well as the leads for the surgery & cancer, medicine, and specialist hospital boards.
• Represent Palliative Care at relevant clinical and strategic meetings within the hospital.
• Share the clinical leadership with colleagues within the UCLH Palliative Care Team depending on demand.
• Actively contribute to the UCLH Supportive, Palliative and End of Life Care Strategy 2024-2028 agenda, working closely with relevant clinicians to optimise patient care, communication and use of hospital beds.

Person Specification

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential

• Primary Medical Degree
• Approved Clinician status
• Full GMC Registration with a Licence to practice
• MRCP (UK) or recognised equivalent, and inclusion on the Specialist Register (applicants who expect to CCT expected within 6 months of interview date are welcomed)

Desirable

• An additional postgraduate qualification of relevance to the work

• Proven ability to lead clinical care across professional and organisational boundaries
• Experience of working within the community
• Ability to work with sensitivity within a multicultural society
• An understanding of the principles and practical applications of clinical governance systems, education, quality improvement etc
• Understanding of the drivers influencing NHS and commercial health care providers and current and proposed national organisational changes
• Ability and commitment to teach in a clinical and academic setting
• Ability to act as a consistent reference point in a team and to take a leadership role
• Ability to prioritise workload, to delegate responsibilities as appropriate

Desirable

• Ability to support advanced practitioners from other professional groups develop new skills
• Higher qualification in medical education
• Completed training to be a clinical and or educational supervisor
• Proven experience of management in a clinical area
