Job responsibilities

To work as a member of the multidisciplinary team and participate in patient assessment and the delivery and evaluation of treatment. Responsibilities include assessment of new patients, review of existing patients and planning treatment with keyworkers.

To be responsible for day-to-day medical assessment and decision-making (with appropriate support and working within limits of competence).

To liaise closely with patients keyworkers, who will be primarily responsible for co-ordinating their care. The post holder may be required to hold a small caseload, although the post holder will primarily review existing patients collaboratively with their allocated keyworker. Follow-up reviews may be facilitated should the patients presentation change or require a care plan review.

The model of addictions services is different to community mental health outpatient clinics - referrals are from keyworkers or duty workers in the service and are jointly facilitated to support further assessment or management. The number of assessments per week varies depending on patient complexity, need or if patient is new or follow-up.

To provide clinical advice to team members on a 1:1 basis and within MDT meetings.

To manage community patients undergoing detoxification for drug and/or alcohol dependence.

To initiate, stabilise and maintain patients on opiate substitute treatment (OST).

To undertake mental health reviews on patients.

To provide health care appropriate to the patients physical needs and make appropriate referrals to medical colleagues.

To provide support to designated and prospective Non-Medical Prescribers.

To participate in providing training to staff at ARC-MK as well as any students (medical, nursing and social work) attending the service.

• IT literacy

• Competence in assessing and managing substance use disorders

• Commitment to research, quality improvement and continuing professional development (CPD)
• Sickness (or attendance) record that is acceptable to the Trust
• Declared medically fit by the Occupational Health Dept to perform the duties of the post
• Commitment to service development for vulnerable populations
• Ability to be flexible and work as part of a changing, dynamic organisation

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

• Full GMC registration and current licence to practice

Desirable

• Has obtained paper A or B of MRCPsych (or equivalent) qualification

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

Essential

• Completed at least 1-year regular hospital or community-based service at Core Trainee (CT) grade (or equivalent)
• Psychiatry training / experience

Desirable

• Experience of working within a mental health inpatient or community setting
• Experience of working in addiction treatment settings
• Experience of prescribing opiate substitute treatments
• Experience of quality improvement
