Job summary

We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Specialty/SAS/Trainee psychiatric doctor or Consultant looking for a locum full or part time, looking to work and gain experience in perinatal psychiatry. We welcome applicants that with or without experience in perinatal psychiatry, as training and supervision will be provided. This job will provide the opportunity to develop and improve knowledge and skills working with woman with mental health problems and families in the perinatal period.

The K&C perinatal mental health team is a very pleasant and nice place to work, with great interpersonal relationship between all team members, and we get great feedback from all that have trained in our service and worked as part of the MDT. This post is available for a short time to cover Maternity leave of our specialty doctor, until September 2023, with possibility to extend for another 2 to 3 months. It is a great opportunity to gain experience, skills and training in perinatal psychiatry, with internal and external trainings on perinatal and infant mental health regularly delivered within the service.

We welcome international candidates that can provide evidence of training and experience working in psychiatry at a senior trainee, associate specialist or consultant level that want to relocate to the UK and that can obtain GMC medical registration with a licence to practice.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will be highly motivated, energetic and passionate about delivering high quality care to patients with acute and chronic psychiatric conditions that increase their risks of relapse in perinatal period, ensuring that assessment and interventions are provided in a sensitive, accessible and culturally appropriate way.

The post-holders will be part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of a Consultant Psychiatrist, specialist perinatal mental health nurses, trainee psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and psychotherapist and parent-infant psychotherapist, social worker, occupational therapist, nursery nurse and support worker. We have full administrative support.

About us

CNWL Perinatal Mental Health Service (PMHS) comprises specialist multidisciplinary perinatal mental health teams one for each of the five boroughs served by the trust (Brent, Harrow, Hillingdon, Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster) enabling the delivery of evidence based perinatal mental health care through a coordinated multidisciplinary specialist approach across maternity, primary and secondary care, tertiary specialist services, social care and the voluntary sector.

You will join a team that delivers specialist community perinatal mental health (PMHT) care, which integrate maternity services, community and primary care health services and social care. We respond rapidly to presentations within the perinatal period, with screening, diagnosing and treating mental illness and associated risks to both mothers and unborn/infants within the perinatal period as well as offering pre-conception advice. We focus on prevention and early detection of mental illness as per NICE guidelines and RCPsych PQN guidance, based in the community and maternity wards when required.

The post-holder will work with a medical team consisting of a Consultant Psychiatrist, which will provide supervision and training as required.

The post-holder will occasionally contribute to the supervision of the trainees/medical students, clinical case discussion in MDT meetings and support for other non-medical MDT members and is expected to contribute and write perinatal care plans, safeguarding reports for social care and attend pre-birth planning meetings, review mental health of a patient before discharge from maternity or attended MBU (mother and baby unit) CPA and discharge meetings and children and families safeguarding meetings. Training and supervision will be offered for those less familiar with the above, but good training and experience in perinatal is important as the cases can be complex, but very interesting and care is provided always in a multidisciplinary team approach, never alone.

To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and to provide expertise in risks and psycho-pharmacology (training also provided in this specific area if required) within the department and to the maternity service, whilst upholding professional standards at all times. Make referrals to other professionals as required within the MDT as well as and including children or adult safeguarding or other mental health services.

Essential

  • Medical degree
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Psychiatric training/work experience

Desirable

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Relevant higher degree (e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
