Specialty Doctor - Perinatal Mental Health Team, Milton Keynes

We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Specialty Doctor to work in our Perinatal Mental Health team in Milton Keynes. The team provide specialist care for women (and their babies) with moderate to severe mental illness, this includes offering pre-conceptual counselling alongside working with women during their pregnancy and up to 2 years postpartum. This is an energetic, creative and welcoming team which aims to offer and inspire excellence in community perinatal mental health care.
The successful candidate will be highly motivated, energetic and passionate about delivering high quality patient-centerd care to patients. They should have experience of team working, possess sound organisation skills and be able to work on their own initiative. Effective communication and empathic skills are essential.
The position requires full GMC registration and we are looking for a candidate with experience in general adult psychiatry and/or perinatal mental health. The post-holder will be part of a medical team consisting of a Consultant Psychiatrist and a Trainee Doctor.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be part of the Perinatal Mental Health Team and provide specialist care for women (and their babies) with moderate to severe mental illness. The team is currently expanding its existing service in line with the NHS Long Term Plan, increasing the offer to women experiencing moderate to severe mental health difficulties related to the perinatal period from pre-conception up to 2 years postpartum

Job responsibilities
Provide high quality medical care with support from the Consultant.
Provide psychiatric assessments to patients referred to the team, including psychiatric history and mental state examination, and using a range of assessment methods as appropriate, including the relevant standardised risk assessment.
Provide psychiatric formulations and diagnoses and devise optimal treatment and management plans for patients with mental health and social issues of varying severity and complexity.
Provide timely advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals, including the principles of prescribing in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Provide, with Consultant colleagues, a service with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
Maintain the high level of expertise and skill necessary for the provision of excellent quality perinatal mental health care, aiming for optimal outcomes for mother, infant and the wider family.
Provide medical input to the Perinatal Services patients in a community setting in line with the agreed job plan. This includes assessments of womens mental health and mother-infant relationships and related risks, bio-psycho-social diagnostic formulations, exploration of prevention, treatment and care options, clear communication and shared decision-making with patients (and families as appropriate), communication and joint planning with other professionals and agencies by the most effective means, use of appropriate legal statutes and powers for example the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and Childrens Act where necessary for good patient care.
Ensure care provided is in line with the vision and values of the service for patient-centred, compassionate, high quality care focussed on the needs of the woman, the baby and the wider family, facilitating shared decision-making at all times.
Ensure the highest standards of transparency and clarity in communication with women and other professionals (eg all correspondence addressed to the patient and copied to all professionals).
Support the Perinatal Consultant Psychiatrist in providing clinical supervision to junior doctors that are working or training in the service, and offering clinical advice and information as and when required to all staff.
