Job summary

School Nursing Technicians work as a member of the School Nursing Service in the delivery of Universal child health screening programmes, identifying health needs for new school entrants and delivering health education/health promotion. They support the delivery of the 5-19 Healthy Child Programme to schools and families within Camden. They work closely with Schools, children and families who use our services and play an important contribution in how people experience our services. School Nursing Technicians are expected to be kind and responsive but professional and informative and contribute to the quality of the services we provide by:

keeping the people who using our services as safe as possible by recognising the limits of the School Nursing Technician role and working closely with School Nurses in the planning and delivery of services.

Contributing to the best possible outcomes for children and families by using up-to-date knowledge and skills and adhering to evidence based policies and procedures when delivering programmes of care to promote positive outcomes for children and families.

Ensuring the children and families using our services has a good experience by respecting, empowering and working in partnership with families and partner agencies.

We believe that the best health care is delivered by multi-disciplinary teams working well together and in partnership with other teams.

Main duties of the job

  • Supporting the planning, organisation and delivery of defined aspects of the healthy child programme, School entrant health reviews, parenting support, school liaison, follow up referrals to partner agencies.
  • Working with children and families in the assessment of their health and well-being and making referrals as appropriate under the supervision of the Specialist Community Public Health School Nursing team.
  • Developing and contributing to new entrant parent groups and meetings hosted in schools.
  • Support the School Nursing service in planning programmes of care to promote positive outcomes for children and families, including those requiring a higher level of health promotion or preventative intervention.
  • Communicate effectively with other members of the team regarding the management of individual clients and issues relating to service delivery

The School Nursing Service is part of the primary healthcare team. The service works with children and families within the borough of Camden to provide support and health education, from school entrants rising five years old through to leaving school at 19 years, with the aim of promoting good health, preventing illness to maximize access to education and reach the five healthy outcomes by identifying health needs, screening growth and development and offering practical help and advice.

The post holder will work under the direction of a Specialist School Nurse visiting designated primary schools in Camden. The post holder will work as a member of a skill mix team of school nursing professionals to deliver the 'Healthy Child Programme From 5-19 years old (DOH 2015)'. The post holder will work in partnership with other professionals to meet the health needs of a culturally diverse population of school children and their families and the wider community.

  • Numeracy and Literacy skills required to keep accurate records and administer medicines (if appropriate)
  • NVQ L3 or Foundation degree or equivalent in health and social care/early years qualification

Previous Experience

  • Previous experience of working with children either in health or educational settings

  • Experience working in School Nursing, Health Visiting or similar Community Service as a Support Worker
