Job summary

We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Consultant to work in Harrow Older Adult HTT, CNWL. To provide clinical leadership to the HTT multi-disciplinary service. The postholder will work closely with Older Adult colleagues to continuously improve the quality of older age care.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, energetic and passionate about delivering high quality care to patients suffering an acute phase of a serious mental illness.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have a central role in providing medical input within the Older Adult Home Treatment Team. You will work closely with the other members of the multidisciplinary team, in order to ensure that patients are provided with the highest standards of care.

You will be expected to ensure that any leave taken is covered by members of the clinical teams within which you work. The directorate is keen ensure flexible working and you may, rarely, be asked to undertake additional duties to maintain high quality patient care.

  • Provide senior medical responsibility for the assessment and management of patients in HTT
  • Oversight of and contribution to robust care planning, risk assessment and risk management processes.
  • Support recruitment and ensure optimal retention of team members and uphold morale
  • Ensure good service quality and performance
  • Ensure training needs of psychiatry trainees and medical students are met as well as supporting training of other junior clinical staff
  • Provide senior medical responsibility for the assessment and management of patients

About us

The CNWL Harrow Older Adult HTT team is based at at Bentley House (15-21 Headstone drive, Wealdstone, HA3 5QX). The service is comprised of a service manager, nursing staff and support workers and administrative staff.

The service has strong links to the established Older Adults Mental Health Services, liaison services in acute hospital trusts, Social Services and voluntary services. Other local mental health services with which the service has strong links include Community Mental Health Services and Home Treatment Teams in Harrow, Older Adult Liaison Services at Northwick park hospital and the Ellington ward which is the acute older adult psychiatric ward.

Clinical Duties of Post-Holder

  • Management of patients in the 18beds, ward reviews/Care plan Approach/tribunals and work related to the Mental Health Act.
  • Management of complex cases
  • Clinical leadership of team.
  • Role in assessment of referrals/admissions.
  • Care plan and treatment formulation within the trauma informed framework, guidance on evidence-based treatment and effectiveness.
  • Liaison and collaborative working with other services/agencies.
  • Mental Health Act implementation.
  • Multi-disciplinary, multi-agency and partnership working
  • Ensure that physical health needs are addressed
  • Review and monitoring of the caseload to ensure appropriate care packages are put in place and discharges facilitated to maintain patient flow.
  • Following the cross-cover protocol that has been agreed with another team or colleague which will make sure appropriate cover is in place during absences.

General duties

  • To manage, appraise and provide professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the medical director and in accordance with the Trusts personnel, policies and procedures.
  • To ensure that junior medical staff working with the post holder, operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant.
  • To undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
  • To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively, and submit this promptly through the trusts clinical information systems.
  • To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.
  • To participate in annual appraisal for consultants.
  • To attend and participate in the academic program of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD program.
  • To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
  • To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services, and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
  • To comply with the Trusts agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services
  • To be flexible and willing to undertake differing duties according to the needs of the service, including representing the service at the Directorate strategic meetings.
  • May also be required to provide cover for Specialty Doctors in emergencies. Arranging Locum cover will cater for planned leave cover for the Speciality Doctor

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
