The Adolescent Community Treatment Services (ACTS) is a Tier 4 multidisciplinary team funded by the North West London Provider Collaborative based on the aims of New Care Models. ACTS provides assessment and evidence-based treatment interventions to young people aged 13-17 with serious mental health needs who would otherwise be admitted to a psychiatric General Adolescent Unit.

We went live in July 2019 and won the Royal College of Psychiatry " CAMHS Team of the Year" award for 2020. The team continued to provide home treatment in person during the pandemic and have grown from additional investment from commissioners.

We are looking for a Family & Systemic Psychotherapistto support systemic therapy provision within the Tier 4 pathway.

Main duties of the job

This post is a clinical post with the opportunity to shape the systemic therapy provision in the service . Please see the attached Job Description (JD) and Person Specification (PS) for essential and desired attributes. Please note that this is a development post, with built-in progression from Band 7 to Band 8a.

All clinicians in the team - including consultant psychiatrists and team manager- provide care coordination. This flattened hierarchy promotes open clinical discussion and respectful co-working. In addition to care coordinating up to 4 young people, the Family & Systemic Psychotherapist will deliver family therapy to clients in the Tier 4 pathway and to ensure that all ACTS' clients, their families/ carers and networks receive systemic-informed formulations and interventions.

There is a positive team identity and an ethos built around reflective practice and staff wellbeing.

The ACTS team works Monday through Friday, 9 am - 5 pm as one part of the CNWL model which offers 24/7 response and care to young people struggling with mental health difficulties.

We cover a large and diverse area - Brent, Harrow, Hillingdon, Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster. The team is based in the heart of our "patch". We have a cheerful team office in Monks Park Health Centre, HA9 6JE - with multiple public transport links and free on-street parking.

Job responsibilities

  • To act as care coordinator for a defined caseload of complex young people with serious mental health needs that present in crisis.
  • To provide highly specialist assessment and treatment for young people with serious mental health needs that may present a significant risk to themselves and /or others.
  • To provide initial assessments drawing on professional systemic training and experience and clinical skills as well as appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of evidence-based sources including the use of routine outcome measures, rating scales, and semi-structured interviews with young people/ families.
  • To formulate and implement plans for the formal clinical treatment and/or management of emotional and behavioural difficulties of young people, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of these problems employing methods based upon evidence of proven efficacy within modality and with reference to appropriate clinical guidelines and care pathways (e.g. NICE).
  • In liaison with colleagues and in response to an identified need, to provide specialist systemic psychotherapy with clinical autonomy drawing on a range of models and wherever possible brief intervention
  • To practice in a way which is inclusive and considerate of the needs of each individual in the system including family members and their varying developmental stages and current emotional stage.
  • Regularly monitor and evaluate therapeutic interventions and progress using routine outcome measures and include family members where appropriate.
  • To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options considering both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical, environmental and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.
  • To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of young people whose problems are managed by care plans.
  • Assess and manage clinical risk to self and others and be able to create suitable care plans and safety / supervision plans to ensure young people can safely receive appropriate evidence-based treatment in the community.
  • To provide specialist mental health advice guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to a young persons formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • To communicate in a highly skilled and sensitive manner, highly sensitive and complex information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of young people under their care.
  • To provide expertise, advice and support to facilitate the effective and appropriate provision of psychological care by all members of the team.
