Job summary

CNWL are currently on the lookout for a Consultant Psychiatrist for the Joint Homelessness Team in Westminster, to provide clinical leadership to a team as a part of a multi-disciplinary service.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide senior medical responsibility for the patients managed by the team and to support and contain all members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Support recruitment and ensure optimal retention of team members and uphold morale
  • Ensure good service quality and performance
  • Ensure GPs and primary care clinicians are supported to provide mental health care
  • Optimise links with voluntary sector partners to support patient care
  • Ensure training needs of psychiatry trainees and medical students are met as well as supporting training of other junior clinical staff

This post sits within Jameson Division, which holds adult mental health services within the inner London boroughs of Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea, and the outer boroughs of Brent and Harrow.

This is one of only two teams in London dedicated to the care of street homeless with severe mental illness and led by a consultant psychiatrist. It provides a service to Westminster which has one of the highest street homeless populations in the UK, attracting people to the political and transport centre of the UK from all over Britain and the world.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. Assessment of new patients and clinical supervision of assessments carried out by other team members.
  2. Review complex needs patients to ensure appropriate care packages are put in place
  3. Mental Health Act related-work
  4. Domiciliary and outreach visits to provide assessment
  5. Domiciliary assessments in response to emergencies
  6. Occasional psychiatric assessments of residents who may be in crisis in another borough.
  7. There would also be an expectation that the post holder would participate in some early morning or late-night street outreach approximately once per month.
  8. Ensure that physical health needs are addressed
  9. Review and monitoring of the caseload to ensure appropriate care packages are put in place and discharges facilitated to maintain patient flow.
  10. Develop good working relationships with local GPs and other key providers
  11. Close liaison with the wards to facilitate admission and discharge planning.
  12. Liaison with HTT, Psychiatric Liaison Services, AMHP services and Forensic Services in the borough.
  13. Develop working relationships with local voluntary sector services in order to support and promote recovery
  14. Participation in the local AC rota will make sure appropriate cover is in place during absences.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.

Desirable

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • Additional clinical qualifications.
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists

ELIGIBILITY

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12

Desirable

  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice

TRANSPORT

  • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative.
