Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Practice Nurse within our in-patient rehabilitation services both in Horton & London.

The successful candidate will work within a dedicated team of different disciplines to assess and treat a range of mental health conditions, challenging behaviour and severe and enduring mental illnesses.

Band 6 nurses work in partnership with the people who use our services, their families, friends and carers and play an important contribution in how people experience their care and relate to other people. Band 6 nurses are expected to be compassionate, responsive and approachable but professional and informative and contribute to the quality of the service provided to the people in our care:

  • Keeping the people who use our services as safe as possible through the use of sound clinical skills and effective risk assessments;
  • Ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by using up-to-date skills and adhering to evidence based policies and procedures;
  • Empowering people through working in partnership throughout their care and treatment in the service.
  • Supporting the development of junior staff and improved care delivery through effective supervision and the use of reflective practice

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an individual who has effective communication skills not only when engaging with services users, but also with their carers and any other professional(s) involved with the service users care.

The successful candidate will have:

o Excellent communication skills and a caring, compassionate approach to patient care.

o Motivation to drive improvement in the care of Inpatients within a mental health setting.

o Be committed to continuous professional development and to working as part of a team.

oAbility to provide strong clinical leadership and role model to others best practice on both the ward as well as the wider unit.

About us

We have a diverse team which, in addition to Psychologists, includes Arts Psychotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Doctors, Pharmacists, peer support worker and employment specialist. We aim to provide excellent patient care through ongoing service development and ensuring that the clinical teams have the knowledge and skill needed. This is undertaken through supervision and appraisal processes but also through the provision of training opportunities and participation in quality improvement.

As part of your employment we will support you in developing your skill set. To date we have supported members of he nursing team in undertaking ACP, CBTp, HCR20, SVR20, Family Intervention etc.

Essential

  • Degree/Diploma in Mental Health Nursing (RMN).
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse

Previous Expereince

Essential

  • Previous experience as a Band 5 nurse
  • Experience of working in In-patient mental health services.
  • Ability to work proactively with people in planning their recovery utilising the nursing process and act accordingly if changes occur.
  • Experience of providing high quality care and exceeding expectations.
  • Experience of supervising and assessing student nurses.
  • Experience of undertaking supervision for junior members of the team
  • Understanding of the application of the Care Programme Approach.
  • Understand how to undertake an accurate risk assessment and its application to decision making.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with people where detention includes restrictions.

Skills and knowledge

  • Able to communicate with the multi-disciplinary team, present cases, take note of actions, update others in the team and use handover effectively. Speaking face to face but also by telephone and writing letters and reports.
  • Maintaining accurate, timely, concise and legible clinical records both electronic and handwritten which adhere to the CNWL policies

  • provide supervision & support to other members of the ward team, including student nurses
