An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Peer Safe Practice Tutor to join our friendly and dynamic CNWL Safety Team, drawing on their own personal lived experience in order to support in the co-production and co-delivery of the Trust-wide training for the Therapeutic Management of Violence and Aggression (TMVA)

Please note only candidates who have personal experience of mental health difficulties and have accessed inpatient mental health services should apply.

Main duties of the job

The role of the Peer Safe Practice Tutor has been developed specifically for people who have lived experience of recovery from mental health challenges, experience of personally accessing inpatient mental health services and of receiving restrictive interventions during admission.

As an integral and highly valued member of the Safe Practice Team, the Peer Safe Practice Tutor will assist in the co-delivery of comprehensive Trust-wide training on the prevention and therapeutic management of violence and aggression (TMVA), for all levels of staff.

The post holder will work with the team to ensure training materials are reviewed and developed to uphold and promote a recovery focused approach, and will draw upon their own lived experience when co-producing and delivering training.

The post holder will support in ensuring that the principles of recovery are upheld within the team as well as across CNWL inpatient services as part of their Link Peer Tutor work.

Job responsibilities

  1. To co-deliver Trust Wide TMVA training across Trust sites, including facilitating simulation-based training. The physical aspect of the training involves teaching, assessing and actively participating in highly specialised bespoke techniques to ensure safety of all persons involved.
  2. To utilise own personal lived experience as a person in recovery in order to support staff to gain better understanding of the experience of using inpatient services and help staff to consider the impact of restrictive interventions.
  3. To work as a pro-active Link Peer Tutor for specified clinical areas and teams, by providing recovery-focused advice and guidance, ensuring training, de-escalation techniques and staff/patient debriefs are kept high on their agenda.
  4. To promote the principles of recovery within the Safety Team, the Trust TMVA training and across CNWL inpatient services
  5. To promote the awareness of recovery focused practice by modelling a positive strengths-based approach, and the use of non-discriminatory language in training and in relationships with clinical teams.
  6. To promote positive understanding, awareness and attitudes towards mental and physical health as part of day-to-day duties.
  7. To regularly review Datix entries and clinical records systems (SystmOne), and following up on these with specific services.
  8. To ensure a psychologically safe environment for the staff attending training, providing emotional support to staff who may express/exhibit emotional or psychological distress pre and post training as well during training.
  9. Assist in signposting individual who may require immediate support outside of the training environment.
  10. Consult and inform the Safe Practice Team Manager of any issues that may affect the efficient delivery of the training.
  11. To identify and address additional learning support needs that learners may have to enable them to access and complete courses.
  12. To ensure the content of courses reflect innovative and current practice, compromise a range of perspectives and is informative and culturally sensitive.
  13. To respect integrity, confidentiality, clinical governance and data protection requirements in line with Trust policy.
  14. To work collaboratively with colleagues across the Trust, contributing proactively to the Trust-wide Restrictive Interventions Group
  15. To support in the development and evaluation of the TMVA training programmes and contribute to on-going design of further programmes
  16. To Support the Trusts Key Quality Priority in Violence Reduction by participating in Quality Improvement Projects
  17. Maintain an up to date knowledge base and ensure professional, academic and personal credibility.
  18. To ensure that all activity relating to the training is recorded as directed by the Safe Practice Team Manager.
  19. To help prepare and organise any necessary IT equipment, computer software or paperwork for all training sessions prior to any event thereby ensuring that each session is run in a professional manner.
  20. To set up any training room to the highest standard to provide an environment suited to learning, by ensuring it is clean and tidy.
  21. To ensure that any fault with the training environment will be reported to the Safe Practice Team Manager.
  22. To ensure that any hand written and electronic records are maintained in accordance with Trust policy.
  23. To assist, as required in the gathering of information and evaluations relating to training, in accordance with Trust Guidelines.
  24. To assist in the implementation and updating of the requirements of the use of force legislation, upholding the current and ongoing changes and processes regarding use of force. To understand the use of force legislation and how that impacts on staff and service users.
  25. To assist in delivering training which complies with the legislation surrounding use of force and best practice regarding use of force. Ensuring participants have an understanding in reduction and alternative method used prior to force. Force as a last resort approach.
  26. To assist the team and participate in the current and ongoing accreditation process for CNWL Safe Practice team. This will require working with the accreditation team, implementing and updating training standards with the Safe Practice team.

  1. To participate in Trust mandatory training & development opportunities considered appropriate to the role and as identified in the Personal Development Plan (PDP)
  2. To undertake the accredited Developing Expertise in Peer Support Level 4 module at London South Bank University.
  3. To contribute and commit to undertaking an annual Development review/ Appraisal
  4. To engage in regular 1:1 peer supervision with the Safe Practice Advanced Lived Experience Practitioner
  5. To attend bi-monthly peer supervision groups as stated in our Trustwide policies.
  6. To receive regular line management supervision as arranged by the team manager.
