KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical / Professional Duties and Responsibilities:

1. To assess and manage own caseload of children with different conditions and needs within the OT service at different community and educational settings with supervision from the Band 7 Advanced Paediatric Occupational Therapist. The specific caseload will be arranged in relation to the post holders clinical experience, preference and also stage of professional development within paediatric OT practice.
2. To provide specialist assessment and intervention in the following areas according to the childs stage of development and specific needs with consideration of the social and family background, with clinical support provided by the supervising therapist if necessary:-

1. • Functional independence in activities of daily living:
     1. Participation in self-care activities
     2. Participation in productive activities
     3. Participation in play and leisure activities

1. • Minor and major adaptation for environmental modification.
   • Special seating and positioning systems.
   • Splinting to improve/maintain the functional use of arms and hands.

1. To provide specialist OT advice to other disciplines and professionals.
2. To be able to work flexibly and prioritise according to the childs needs, Departmental policies on service delivery and meeting of key performance indicators.
3. To seek supervision and support from senior staff/supervisor when required.
4. To carry out school/nursery and home visits to advise teaching staff/parents/carers on intervention activities.
5. To provide written reports as well as written intervention programmes which incorporate functional occupational therapy aims into the childs home/school/nursery timetable.
6. To liaise and work collaboratively with other health and multi-agency professionals to develop and implement comprehensive specialist intervention packages for children with complex conditions e.g. consultant paediatricians, social workers, etc.
7. To deliver specialist training (both informal and formal) independently or together with senior staff within clinical area appropriate to the needs of course participants. This includes parents, carers, and health or education professionals both independently and in conjunction with other professionals.
8. To deliver group, parent workshops or individual intervention sessions as deemed appropriate to the caseload.
9. To carry out risk assessments and to keep up to date with and adhere to new guidelines and legislation regarding equipment provision, manual handling and safe working practices.
10. To attend relevant courses, lectures and visits and keep up to date with relevant professional knowledge, mandatory trainings and to show evidence of application of knowledge in working practice.
11. To supervise junior staff members (e.g. Band 5 OT, OT assistant/technicians) and/or OT students on practice placements and be responsible for their professional development through annual appraisals, PDP reviews and/or practice placement reviews.
12. To contribute to the development of new service delivery models in order to facilitate the effective use of resources and meet the current demands and changes.
13. Involve in different service development and clinical governance activities e.g. participate in clinical audits, undertake research etc.
14. To provide clinical cover of urgent cases for other therapists who are on leave or vacancies in other service settings.

Administrative Duties and Responsibilities:

1. To keep up-to-date statistical information on clinical activities in a timely fashion according to Trust policies and key performance indicators.
2. To keep up-to-date client register, records and reports of clients as appropriate e.g. electronic system, paper files.
3. To keep a record of inventory of equipment belonging to the department in different service settings covered by the therapist.
4. To help to maintain a good filing system for case files and clinical information within the base or areas of work including paper and electronic information.
5. To follow Departmental procedures, e.g. sick leave arrangement, travelling claims, monthly attendance sheet, etc.
6. To attend and make contribution in regular staff meetings and in-service training sessions e.g. Team CPD activities.
7. To participate in quality assurance, clinical governance (e.g. audit), and outcome measures projects conducted by the Department or the Trust.
8. To be responsible for the allocated fund within the whole services budget for the purchasing of intervention resources within a particular community setting.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Registration with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as an Occupational Therapist and has professional indemnity arranged.
• Recognised Occupational Therapy (OT) degree qualification or equivalent, i.e. DipCOT/BSc OT
• Evidence of continuous professional development (e.g. attendance of journal clubs, conferences, professional specialist interest activities) in the field of OT.

Desirable

• MSc in OT
• Evidence of successful completion of specialist training courses e.g. School AMPS, CO-OP etc
• Registered member with relevant professional bodies e.g. RCOT, RCOT CYPFSS etc.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

• Substantial post registration OT clinical experience with a range of different conditions and/or in different service settings.
• Display understanding and use of evidence-based practice e.g. application of current research, reflection of practice.
• Experience in working with a multidisciplinary team and/or also working across different settings and agencies, e.g. acute, community, education, social services.
• Basic knowledge of relevant legislation or policies related to working with children, young people and families.
• Basic level of knowledge and experience in service development and clinical governance e.g. audits.
• Knowledge of typical child development and its application in OT assessment and intervention.
• Knowledge of different conceptual models of practice in OT.

Desirable

• Working/clinical experience within paediatric OT
• Other Band 6 work experience within a related field.
• Experience working with children within different capacities
• Knowledge and experience in the Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Essential

• Ability to be a good team member, assume responsibilities and support team working within the team.
• Demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills including observation, listening and empathy skills using various modes e.g. face-to-face, virtual platforms, emails, phone calls, record keeping, documentation, report writing etc.
• Demonstrate good personal organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively, manage time efficiently and work under pressure.
• Has competent IT skills e.g. word processing, managing data on spreadsheet, presentation of information etc.
• Be flexible and adaptive in a changing environment.

Desirable

• Ability to supervise and teach junior staff, Occupational Therapy Students / Technicians / Assistants.
• Ability to facilitate group intervention/ training.
• Ability to work under pressure and independently.
