Clinical Leader - Emergency Department

Job summary

The Band 6 Clinical Lead in the Emergency Department is a key leadership role focused on delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care. The post holder will act as a visible leader, supporting staff and maintaining high clinical standards in a fast-paced environment.

You will lead by example, support the Unit Manager, take charge of shifts, and share responsibility for achieving performance targets. The role includes active involvement in patient safety, identifying and escalating risks, and promoting a culture of learning and continuous improvement.

You will help manage patient flow, coordinating resources to ensure the timely assessment and movement of patients. This requires close collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, including medical colleagues, AHPs, support staff, site teams, and specialty services.

You will support and guide staff of all grades, promoting wellbeing, professionalism, and effective teamwork. Strong leadership includes managing conflict appropriately and maintaining a positive working culture.

At times, you will deputise for the Unit Manager and contribute to the development and implementation of departmental policies and SOPs.

Main duties of the job

Providing evidence based quality care for patients and service users.

To co-ordinate and take charge of the department

To ensure staff wellbeing is upheld and that patient care is delivered in a safe and timely manner in adherence to local policies and procedures.

Maintain a good working relationship with all specialities/MDT

Encourage growth and training within the team, supporting more junior staff.

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Essential

  • 1st level registered nurse. Recent post basic clinical qualification in relevant area
  • Recent relevant experience at senior level within the speciality. Evidence of clinical competence in speciality. Able to assume a lead clinical role as appropriate. Understanding of the setting and monitoring of standards. Evidence of teaching and developing staff. Able to work as a member of the multidisciplinary clinical team
