Job summary
The role of an Apprentice Anatomical Pathology Technician (APT) has arisen based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary but also working at Furness General Hospital. As an Apprentice APT you will work under supervision with the hospital mortuary assisting qualified staff in the care of deceased and assisting post mortem examinations. The role combines practical, technical an administrative responsibilities while adhering to strict health and safety and legal standards. The apprenticeship provides structured training to develop the knowledge , skills and professional behaviours to become a qualified APT. The job description describes the roles that apprentices will be working towards during the training period of the Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology.
Supervision and support (direct and indirect) will be provided and available during all tasks, with progression being dependent on the completion of set objectives throughout a training period of up to 3 years.

Main duties of the job
Assist with the safe receipt, identification and storage of deceased patients.
Support Pathologists and qualified APT's in preparing deceased for post mortem examinations.
Observe and assist in post mortem procedures under supervision.
Follow infection prevention and control procedures to maintain a safe environment.
Handle specimens appropriately ensuring accurate labelling and recording.
Maintain facilities ensuring cleanliness and compliance with Human Tissue Authority standards.
Support bereaved families showing compassion and professionalism.
About us
We operatefrom three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, andUlverstonCommunity Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies,daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Our Community Service for adults are provided in people's homes ,community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent , improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care , advice and support.
