Ophthalmic Technician

Job summary

We are looking for someone with/without NHS Ophthalmic experience to join a multi-disciplinary team at Furness General Hospital to deliver high quality patient care.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake specific ophthalmic assessments following a comprehensive training package. Previous experience using related ophthalmic technology e.g. Humphrey Visual fields Analyser and OCT would be an advantage.

You need to be flexible, enthusiastic and committed to bringing the highest level of care to patients. The successful candidate will have the support of the Clinical Team, Nurse-coordinator and the Department Manager.

Main duties of the job

The Ophthalmic technician will function as part of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) within the department, to provide a seamless service and high quality care to patients with proximal supervision from a registered member of staff.

The post holder will continue to develop and undertake a range of delegated tasks:Be proficient in undertaking Corneal Topography or be prepared to develop the skills to perform the required scans, to assistthe Ophthalmologist in the diagnosis and treatment of anumber of corneal conditions

Be able to competently perform/ be prepared to develop the skills to use the Humphrey automated visual filed machineon patients of all ages,ranging from paediatrics to the elderly and on those who have varying communication skills.

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life-threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people's homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Essential

  • GCSE Maths and English at least grade C or equivalent numeracy and literacy skills level 2
  • NVQ level 3 qualification in care related area or equivalent
  • Commitment to completing in-house workbooks in the use of the ophthalmology technology e.g. Humphrey Visual fields, OCT, Corneal Topography and Biometry
  • Previous experience working in a clinical ophthalmic setting
  • Ability to work with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work under instruction as well as to work on own initiative as required
  • Ability to convey and prioritise information to a range of people including; Medical and nursing staff Patients and carers, some of whom may have communication difficulties or language barriers, or may be anxious or distressed about their eye condition
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written with the ability to communicate effectively and with sensitivity
  • Committed to delivering high quality service and developing clinical practice based on reflection and evidence based practice

Desirable

  • ECDL or equivalent
