Job summary

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust are inviting applications for an international Dental Training Initiative (DTI) Training post in Oral and Maxillofacial. The post will be for a fixed term 12 month clinical attachment in the Oral and Maxillofacial Department to provide clinical experience and development opportunities for a Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

  • Provide outpatients new, review and treatment clinics under the guidance & supervision of the Oral and Maxillofacial Consultants.
  • Participate in case reviews, feedback sessions and maintain a logbook of clinical experience gained during the post.
  • Support the work of Junior staff within the department, including supervising undergraduates when appropriate.
  • Become involved in the interdisciplinary care of patients with Orthodontic and Restorative Dentistry Teams
  • Support the Oral and Maxillofacial Department in delivering undergraduate & postgraduate training in partnership with the University of Central Lancashire.
  • Become involved in regional networks such as the MCN for Oral and Maxillofacial
  • Participate in clinical audit.
  • Be expected to take an active part in continuing medical education.
  • The Trust encourages involvement in clinical governance.

Main duties of the job

The Unit provides a comprehensive secondary care service in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The successful candidate will work along side the consultant and junior Oral and Maxillofacial team. The maxillofacial unit also provides teaching for undergraduate dental students from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) and University of Leeds who attend placements at the Trust.

There are offices, secretarial and computer facilities on all of our sites. We have and electronic EPR and PACs system for radiography and digital photography across the Bay.

There is a fully equipped maxillofacial laboratory based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary with high quality and skilled technical support.

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life-threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people's homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.
