We are looking for a General Surgery Consultant, with focus on emergency & benign upper GI/biliary surgery, and some flexibility around service needs. The department has recently restructured, following departure of a consultant colleague. The post holder will undertake initially 10 PA including 1.5 SPA and 1 admin PA. On-calls are at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, a level-two trauma centre, on a 1 in 8 non-resident basis. The post holder will have support from a middle-grade doctor, with ward support from FY Drs and specialist nurse practitioners. The administrative burden will be supported by a named secretary and waiting-list coordinator. Upon taking up post, a consultant mentor is available if required. Main duties of the job

DUTIES OF THE POST

  • Provide outpatient new & review clinics including urgent referrals
  • Preparation of patients for theatre and post-operative care.
  • Dealing with both routine and emergency attenders.
  • Play a lead role in the clinical management of patients.
  • Routine inpatient ward rounds following on-call periods
  • Be involved in complex clinical, patient management problems and inter-disciplinary planning treatment.
  • Participate in clinical audit & demonstrate evidence based practice where appropriate.
  • Participation in consultant on-call service at RLI
  • Adequate handover of care must take place where appropriate and necessary as directed by the clinical lead, with communication of details about all problem patients.
  • Completion of discharge summaries is mandatory for all patients within 24 hours.
  • Initiate and be involved in service developments in their areas of special interest and in line with the Trust's vision.
  • Comply with Trust policies and complete mandatory training
  • Use Trust systems as directed (e.g. paperless clinics, e-outcomes, Lorenzo)
  • Actively participate in continuing medical education.
  • Undertake and participate in the appraisal process, job planning as part of revalidation

On Call

The on call is 1 in 8. After being on call, the post holder will do a post take ward round and have access to an afternoon CEPOD emergency list which is consultant supervised. This is currently worked in two blocks of 4, and 3 days.

About us

You will contribute to General Surgery services offered by the Trust, providing highest quality care. You will have support from a middle-grade doctor, with ward support from FY Drs and specialist nurse practitioners. The administrative burden will be supported by a named secretary and waiting-list coordinator. Upon taking up post, a consultant mentor is available if required. You will join a 1:8 consultant on-call rota and run an emergency service, performing all common emergency general operations. The on-call period is followed by blocks of inpatient rounds, to maintain patient safety & continuity. You will be one of five general surgeons in the department, alongside five with colorectal interests (two surgeons not oncall). General Surgery at RLI has evolved to include high volume endocrine surgery, specialist abdominal wall reconstruction services and we wish next to develop a hot gall bladder service. Competencies in upper GI endoscopy and ERCP are desirable. The Trust will expect you to take part in CPD and support you with a study leave allowance. The Trust is committed to support annual appraisal, using the online resource L2P, and in turn revalidation. Participation at monthly audit, mortality and morbidity meetings is expected, with engagement in clinical audit & quality improvement. There will also be opportunities for research and development.
