Job summary

The post holder is an autonomous practitioner who will be responsible for the clinical optometry services.

To provide clinical leadership to the Optometrists and Orthoptic team by providing an extensive range of essential and sub specialty services to the highest standard of quality and care.

To manage referrals into optometry unit, triaging referrals into the ophthalmology department and directing them to the relevant clinic.

Main duties of the job

As a senior clinician, the post holder is expected to be capable of managing complex cases independently and to provide clinical advice and expert opinion to colleagues as necessary.Procedures involve the use of specialist ophthalmic instrumentation to a high degree of accuracy. Analysis and interpretation of specialist test results will be necessary in order to prescribe the appropriate optical appliances andplan or revise individual programmes of patient care.

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people's homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Education and qualifications

Essential

  • B.Sc.(Hons) in Optometry
  • Post Graduate, Master's Independent Prescribing course
  • Advanced clinical training in Medical Retina Ophthalmology within a Hospital Eye Service
  • Registered as an Optometrist with the General Optical Council

Desirable

  • College of Optometrists higher qualification (Medical Retina Certificate) or City and Guilds Level 3 VRQ (Vocationally Related Qualifications) or L3 Health Screeners Diploma or be working towards this and act as an assessor for the qualification as required by the service

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive post qualification Experience
  • Experience of specialist hospital Optometry
