Job summary

The Speech and Language Therapy team at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay have a new and exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join the Integrated Community Stroke Team.

The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay trust is nestled alongside the beautiful Lake District National park offering adventure and positive work life balance to employees and local residents.

This post is ideal for someone already working at Band 6 level or an experienced Band 5 ready to take the next steps in their career. Ideally you will have undertaken dysphagia training and have experience of working with stroke survivors. You will be a team player and confident of working in a busy multidisciplinary team.

We provide rehabilitation to stroke patients across all areas of the stroke pathway from acute, inpatient rehabilitation and community rehabilitation.

The post will be initially based at Royal Lancaster infirmary but you may be required to work across the stroke pathway. You will be expected to work flexibly across a six day service as required.

As a team we are fully embedded in the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Stroke and Neuro Delivery Board and take part in continuous stroke improvement across the region, including an SLT specific development group for those SLTs working in stroke. Technology continues to be an embedded part of our service delivery and therapeutic interventions.

Main duties of the job

As a team we also work closely with our colleagues within the Speech and Language Therapy team to share knowledge/ our experiences and support our patients throughout their health journey.

You will be based within a supportive MDT. There is a clear supervision structure and support is also available from our Clinical Specialists within the department. There will be opportunities to be involved with projects to optimise the Stroke Service. You will also develop your leadership and supervision skills. There are extensive training and CPD opportunities available.

All dysphagia competent Band 6 therapists will have opportunity to gain experience in videofluoroscopy.

Working as part of an Integrated care stroke team, you will be responsible for the assessment and management of acquired communication and swallowing impairments post stroke.

You will be responsible for supervision of assistant staff, students, band 5 staff and have opportunity to participate in service development and training within the wider stroke MDT.

As this is a acute and community service that covers a large geographical area, being a driver is essential

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
