Job summary

As the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children for the Trust, the post holder will:

Undertake the duties and responsibilities of the Named Nurse as described in 'Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018.'

Work closely with the Named Doctor, Named Nurse Children Looked After, Named Nurse Adults, Named Midwife and other members of the Trust Safeguarding team in providing highly developed specialist advice and support on safeguarding, promoting trauma informed practice with a 'think family' approach.

Provide professional support to all working in the Trust in supporting all activities necessary to ensure that University Hospital Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust Hospitals (UHMB) meets its responsibilities in safeguarding children including those children who die, (Child Death Review Statutory and Operational Guidance 2018) and when working as a senior member of the team, on duty, this will include Adult safeguarding and protection.

Main duties of the job

Ensure the provision of day to day support and advice for all staff at UHMB regarding children's safeguarding issues and concerns.

Provide support to colleagues in their work with clients with safeguarding issues, domestic violence, family breakdown, substance misuse, disability and mental health issues.

Deliver appropriate training programmes to both health personnel and multiagency and multidisciplinary groups, evaluating the effectiveness of this training and adapting as required.

Work collaboratively with the senior corporate nursing management team in the Trust to ensure safeguarding is reflected in quality and governance.

Work closely with other agencies including the police and social care on health matters with regard to safeguarding children in the hospital and wider community.

Contribute to the work of Cumbria Safeguarding Children Partnership (CSCP) and Lancashire Children Safeguarding Assurance Partnership (CSAP) through participation in interagency meetings and groups, and by undertaking any health contribution required.

Advise and inform the Trust Board Directors and Senior Managers regarding safeguarding and child protection issues.

Provide professional advice, guidance and training to all staff in matters relating to the safeguarding and protection of children.

Ensure all staff have access to safeguarding children training and supervision appropriate to their role and which enable the organisation to fulfil its statutory responsibilities for training.

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
