Job summary
Applications for this substantive post will only be accepted if you are in the process of obtaining your CCT/CSER within six months of interview.
We are inviting applications for a Consultant Acute Physician to join our existing team at Furness General Hospital. Whilst the focus is on Acute Medicine, applicants with a sub- specialty interest are encouraged and a job plan reflecting this would be agreed following appointment.
A subspecialty interest in most specialties would be welcomed by the relevant specialty teams and development of this interest in addition to Acute Medicine encouraged. At Furness General Hospital, we have a strong focus upon team working and the development of excellent working relationships across all our departments. Cross bay working with the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and links with Lancaster University are encouraged
Main duties of the job
The Acute Medical department provides a modern service including the 20 bed Acute Medical Unit (AMU), the Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU), and Acute Medicine Clinics currently held in the on-site day hospital.
The team consists of; 3 Acute Physician Consultants, 3 Trust Associate Specialists and 2 junior doctors.
We see, on average, 2025 patients per day in our AMU, 12-15 per day in ACU and hold 4 clinics per week. We have built up good relationships with local general practitioners and this often results in discussion of cases with GPs and the avoidance of unnecessary admissions if this is felt more appropriate than admission. We have reduced admissions and shortened length of stay but our philosophy is one of ensuring safe, good quality care in a friendly and supportive professional department.
Good office space, IT support and secretarial support is provided. The Acute Medical Unit has 2 Band 8A ANPs and our general medical colleagues provide junior staff for the on call teams.
About us
The Care Group is active, innovative and handles virtually 100% of secondary general medical referrals for its area, offering expertise in Cardiology, Care of the Elderly, Dermatology, Diabetes, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Haematology, Oncology, Palliative Care, Respiratory Medicine and Rheumatology. It provides a wide range of techniques and services, including endocrine investigations; dexa scanning; GI endoscopy; bronchoscopy; chemotherapy; a cardiac, respiratory and oesophageal function laboratory; and ward-based non-invasive positive pressure ventilation.
There is an emergency floor with both the Acute Medical Unit and Ambulatory Care Unit located next to the Emergency Department. The AMU has 20 beds, mostly side-rooms with en-suite facilities and two 4 bedded bays.
The on call team comprises one ST level doctor, 2 FY1s, and 1 intermediate level doctor.
The general medical wards have ward based junior teams (FY1 and 2). ST grades are specialty team based.
