Job summary

This post is designed to give applicants experience of PHEM prior to applying for national PHEM training posts. It will include educational time for clinical experience, training and clinical governance opportunities in PHEM. It will include out of hours work both in the PHEM environment and on the first call/third/obstetric/Friarage anaesthetic oncall rotas at South Tees (Depending on experience).

The post is at post core anaesthetic level, but more senior doctors are also considered. It is split between anaesthetic work at University Hospitals Tees and Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) sessions at the Great North Air Ambulance service in an 80:20 manner respectively. Applicants must be post CT3 level and the successful candidate will be expected to have 24 months or prior Anaesthesia Core or ACCS training (including 3-6 months in intensive care) and to be competent to work with indirect supervision.

Main duties of the job

Clinical commitment

There is a Clinical service commitment inclusive of a 1 in 4, weekend daytime anaesthetic on call cover at Friarage Hospital, Northallerton. This will require independent practice with distant supervision and the ability to arrange and provide safe inter hospital transfer of unwell patients. Anaesthetic cover at Friarage Hospital provides emergency airway, resuscitation and transfer support for the acute medical unit and inpatient care only. Further out of hours on-call in support of the James Cook University anaesthesia rota tiers may be required to a maximum overall on-call frequency of 1:8. There is a flexible service commitment to daytime elective and emergency anaesthesia delivery at James Cook University Hospital with opportunity to tailor sessions to individual interests. All clinical activity will be matched to the fellow's level of training and will include appropriate consultant clinical supervision. A proportion of this work will be service provision, providing solo cover for elective anaesthetic lists (with local consultant supervision).

Must have evidence of adequate experience to fulfil service need. This includes completion of Royal College of Anaesthetist's "Initial Assessment of Competence" and "Initial Assessment of Competence in Obstetric Anaesthesia". Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems as an anaesthetist.

Perioperative Services Directorate

You will join a department consisting of 80 Consultants (including military) and 8 SAS grade doctors who form the Directorate of Anaesthesia across the two sites. In addition, there areResident Anaesthetists in anaesthesia who rotate within the Northern School of Anaesthesia (Northern Deanery) and also locally employed Anaesthetists ( These include those working on portfolio pathway towards becoming a consultant). The department provides anaesthesia for a full range of tertiary services and was recently awarded Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, reflecting excellence in all areas of delivery.
