We have a exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation to join the team at The Golden Jubilee Regional Spinal Cord Injury Centre at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. This is a replacement post to join two existing colleagues in a purpose-built centre integrated within a major trauma centre with full supporting facilities and services.

The postholder will deliver the highest clinical standards in the practice of spinal cord injuries. He/she will take a lead role within the large MDT managing spinal cord injured patients.

The Trust hosts the North East and Yorkshire Spinal Cord Injury Managed Clinical Network, and is working with Pinderfields and Sheffield Spinal Cord Injury Centres to deliver new and innovative ways of service delivery to ensure the best patient care and outcomes.

Main duties of the job

The employing Trust for this post will be South Tees NHS Foundation Trust with the base site being The James Cook University Hospital Spinal Cord Injuries Centre. The Centre is one of only two based within a Major Trauma Centre with access to all services that may be required to support the lifelong care of spinal cord injured patients.

The Spinal Cord Injuries Centre includes 4 level 2 HDU beds and 20 rehabilitation beds. Our Centre provides lifelong care and admits patients for a range of surgical treatments such as urological and plastic surgery treatment.

The post can be developed to support a range of subspecialty interest according to the candidate's skill sets. The postholder will participate in 1:8 on call rota.

About us

The James Cook University Hospital is a major tertiary and teaching centre with over 1000 beds, serving a largely urban population. It provides comprehensive regional specialties including Cardiothoracic surgery, Neurosurgery, Maxillofacial surgery, Plastic surgery, ENT and ophthalmic surgery. It is a regional centre for Spinal Cord Injury, Upper GI and Vascular surgery.

The Golden Jubilee Regional Spinal Cord Injury Centre serves a geographically based catchment in the North of England, from the Scottish Border down to the Lake District and Scarborough, with a population of 3.4 million. The are 4 level 2 HDU beds and 20 rehabilitation beds. The Centre runs outreach clinics and has geographically based outreach specialist nurses. The Centre is supported by a specialist Consultant Urologist, Plastic surgeons, Pain Consultant, an intensivist and spinal surgery team. In addition, there is a dedicated social worker, psychologist, mental health nurse, speech and language therapist and an IT specialist.

The Centre is progressive, and this is an exciting opportunity to join an ambitious team which has a focus on holistic care for spinal cord Injured patients.
