Job summary

Applicants should possess full GMC registration, MRCP (or equivalent) and either already be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of receiving their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview. We would consider applicants with the necessary experience for support throughout he article 14 process towards a CESR. The successful candidate will be appointed under the current terms and conditions of service for NHS Consultants. Full consideration will be given to applicants who wish to apply for a less than full time contract.

Main duties of the job

Both South Tees Trust and our local commissioners have a strong commitment to invest in our acute medical service. Critical to this development plan is an expansion in our existing team of 8 consultant physicians, to enhance the care we deliver. This post is based at the Friarage Hospital. Applicants should be suitably qualified and experienced in acute or general medicine and their chosen specialist field.

In March 2018 we centralised our critical care delivery on the James Cook site and rebranded our A&E to an urgent treatment centre but continue to have critical care outreach support and a sophisticated patient transfer system. To ensure safety we have adopted a consultant triaged acute medical take open to both GPs and paramedics. This is co-ordinated well into the evening by resident consultant level decision making. This innovative service is working well and we strongly believe will be the model that other small rural hospitals will adopt. Friarage ambulatory care service has a fully integrated out-patient and home parenteral antibiotic (OHPAT) service which has community delivery network spanning 1000 square miles. We soon plan to integrated community frailty services into this team too.

About us

The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton is small district general set in a beautiful rural location, serving Richmondshire and Hambleton of North Yorkshire. James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough has a full range of tertiary referral specialties and is a regional cardiothoracic and major trauma centre.

The Friarage Hospital is a friendly place, loved by both staff, patients and our local primary care colleagues. Resident medical specialities at Friarage are Diabetes/Endocrinology, Respiratory Medicine, Stroke Rehabilitation, Cardiology, Rheumatology and Infectious Diseases. Our relationship with James Cook University Hospital ensures excellent support from tertiary referral specialties and most other medical and surgical teams have visiting representation. In the winter of 2018 we opened our fabulous new £10M Sir Robert Ogden cancer centre. In 2021 we went into a partnership with Hull York Medical school opening a centre for undergraduate medical education and a new surgical hub is currently being built on the site which will be operational in 2025.

We are fortunate to be providing a very high quality acute medical service. Our on-site radiology support - including a new MRI scanner - is superb.
