Job summary
The Neonatal Unit at The James Cook University Hospital is a part of the Northern Neonatal Network and provides a Level 3 neonatal service (as defined by the British Association of Perinatal Medicine) for sick newborn babies in the Northeast of England and North Yorkshire. This unit is approved for higher specialist training in neonatology by the RCPCH College Specialty Advisory Committee and Health Education Northeast. There is an accredited specialist Fetal Medicine Service on site, as well as Paediatric Ophthalmology, Paediatric Ear Nose and Throat surgery, and Paediatric Anaesthetics. There is also a large acute Paediatric Department with different sub-specialties including a sub-regional PICU, neuro-disability, and community paediatrics. The department has strong links with other perinatal centres within and outside the UK and provides opportunities for useful research leading to MD or PhD degrees.
Main duties of the job
There are excellent clinical, academic and research opportunities on the Unit to provide a comprehensive programme for specialist training in neonatal paediatrics. You will have a designated clinical and educational supervisor. All posts allow you to attend regional study days, individual study leave and research meetings. This unit provides you with supervised experience and appropriate responsibilities in the assessment and management of all aspects of neonatal care through ward rounds, emergency on-call commitments and retrieval of sick newborns, dedicated neonatal follow up programme and neurodevelopmental paediatrics while giving opportunities for attachment to allied specialist clinics locally. There are excellent simulation training opportunity in collaboration with the trust simulation team at STRIVE.
About us
The Neonatal Unit is an independent directorate within the trust's 'Community Centre' which also manages the paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and maternity teams. There are monthly directorate meetings to which Doctors are welcomed. This should give them the experience in management and budgeting. In addition, the trust and Health Education North East run workshops in clinical management and in clinical and educational supervision.
