TRUST DOCTOR (Foundation) in NEUROLOGY & STROKE

THE JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Applications are invited for the above post, to commence August 2024 for 12 months.

This post is most suitable for doctors who are wishing to gain additional experience in neurology and stroke before obtaining a medical rotation at IMT level. It could also be suitable for trainees with some previous rotational neurology/stoke experience who wish to gain further training to count towards potential specialty training scheme applications in the future.

South Tees Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest in the country and provides a comprehensive range of medical and surgical specialties including the full range of neurological specialties. There are active postgraduate surgical and medical programmes and excellent library facilities are available.

Main duties of the job

The Trust Doctor, together with the other junior doctors, is responsible for clerking and day to day management of all patients admitted to the Neurology & Stroke Unit (NASU). This includes maintenance of good, clear, regularly updated, signed notes on all patients, communication with general practitioners and attendance at consultant and registrar ward rounds.

This includes working with the following team members:

  • Neurology and Stroke consultants
  • Stroke nurse practitioners and Advanced Clinical Practitioners
  • NASU Physician Associate
  • Therapy teams
  • NASU junior doctors and nursing staff

The role will involve admitting and assessing patients on the NASU, presenting them to senior team members, initiating and interpreting investigations, counselling around treatment options and assisting with treatment delivery. Specific training will be given in lumbar puncture and it is envisaged that the appointee will be able to undertake this intervention independently once competencies are adequately assessed.
