Job summary

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a B6 Occupational Therapist, 37.5 hours per week, on a permanent basis within the Meadowgate Intermediate Care Centre based at Eston, Middlesbrough.

The occupational therapist will work as part of the Integrated Community Therapy Service providing effective and efficient occupational therapy either within the Meadowgate Centre or community setting as appropriate. The 40- bedded centre provides a structured programme of therapy-led, supportive and enabling care to individuals to assist and enable the person to achieve and maintain an optimum level of health and mobility. The main goal is to promote independence to support the person to return home.

The service works Monday - Friday 8.30am - 4:30pm including bank holidays, and the team are looking to introduce a 6 day roster for weekend working on Saturdays. The team is made up of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Therapy Assistant Practitioners.

The post of Senior Occupational Therapist is required:

  • To provide effective and efficient clinical occupational therapy to patients, as part of the Integrated Community Therapy Service within the framework of clinical governance.
  • The service aims to enable individual's to maximise their independence at home and to support timely discharge and prevent avoidable admission to hospital or long term care.
  • To work flexibly to meet the changing needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible for the delivery of Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment to a high professional standard in accordance with Professional Standards and Code of Ethics laid down by the College of Occupational Therapists.
  • To be responsible and accountable for all aspects of professional activities, adhering to local policies and procedures.
  • To autonomously manage, within appropriate professional guidelines, a case load of clients with complex needs and multiple pathologies within community environments.
  • Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
  • Undertake generic and specialist assessment of patients in relation to their physical, psychological social and productivity circumstances and needs.
  • To provide a high standard of occupational therapy to patients in community settings as appropriate within the patient's agreed plan of care and as appropriate to competency levels.
  • To respond to identified needs through critical thinking, consideration of a range of options using sound clinical reasoning and professional judgment and communicating these to patients in order to reach a decision, in collaboration with the patient (or his/her representatives) about how to meet those needs.
