The Medical Psychology service provides psychological assessment, support and treatment to medical patients within South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We are looking for a qualified Health Psychologist to work on an existing research project assessing the feasibility of a digital health and wellbeing intervention (iPrepwell project) designed to target multiple lifestyle behaviours of adults listed for major surgery. The intervention has been developed systematically using a theory and evidence-informed strategy, in collaboration with surgical patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs). The study is being led by South Tees Hospitals in collaboration with York Hospitals and Teesside University.
This post is for internal candidates to South Tees Trust. If you are not currently working within the trust your application will not be reviewed and automatically rejected at shortlisting stage. Please be aware of this when submitting your application.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work within the core research team to support & deliver the iPREPWELL project. Operationally, they will report to the governance manager and research team lead. Professionally, they will be managed with the Medical Psychology team by a Consultant Psychologist.
The role will involve utilising both quantitative and qualitative research methods including interviewing research participants (patients and HCPs) using recognised health psychology frameworks and strategies. It is therefore essential that the post-holder has knowledge of health behaviour change theory, experience of intervention development and evaluation, and qualitative and quantitative research skills. The role will require the ability to work flexibly across hospital sites (James Cook University Hospital, Friarage Hospital, York Hospitals) both in-person and virtually.

We deliver psychological assessment, intervention and support to patients with a range of medical conditions across the lifespan. We utilise third wave therapies (especially Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Mindfulness) alongside CBT as the core therapeutic modalities, with training and supervision provided to support delivery of these approaches. We also carry out clinical audit, research and service evaluation. We have strong links with the Doctoral Training Programmes at the University of Teesside, and we provide teaching, placements and research projects for Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology and Health Psychology trainees.
The Trust encourages innovation and service development, and we actively support this within the Medical Psychology service.
