Job summary

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's Children & Young People's Speech & Language Therapy Service has an exciting vacancy for a specialist speech & language therapist. The post is full time and is required to provide leadership to a small locality team of therapists and assistants as well as specialist speech and language support to any children and young people referred to the Speech & Language Therapy Service in homes, daycare and mainstream settings.

The post additionally has some responsibility for providing a specialist service to children & young people aged 0-25 years with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) and/or eating, drinking & swallowing needs; contributing to the wider speech and language therapy SEND team.

The post will include travelling across the areas of Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland and will include home visits, mainstream and specialist educational settings as well as nurseries and daycare settings.

Main duties of the job

You will provide operational management & leadership to a small locality team of speech and language therapists, assistants and admin support, including the coordination of appointment rotas and day-to-day supervision of the team. This will also include regular liaison with colleagues and partners in the local authorities, including schools and daycare settings.

You will provide specialised speech and language therapy interventions concerning the care and treatment of clients on the specialist caseload and the wider generalist locality caseload - communication and Eating, Drinking & Swallowing (EDS)

You will contribute to service developments and review of work practices, under-pinned by evidence based practices

You will be responsible for electronic record keeping in a sufficient and timely manner, recording personally generated clinical observations and assessment results; also producing letters and reports following assessment, including provision of statutory reports for safeguarding and Education, Health & Care Plans

You will develop your own skills and knowledge and contribute to the development of others

You will contribute to all aspects of governance in the children & young people's speech and language therapy service

About us

The Children & Young People's Speech & Language Therapy Department comprises 26 qualified therapists and 13 assistants, as well as full administrative support from 5 clerical staff. Clinical specialisms covered within the team include Early Years and School Aged SEND, autism, Eating, Drinking & Swallowing, Communication Aids, Speech & Language Disorder, Hearing Loss, Stammering. There is also a strong focus on multi-lingualism and its impact on communication development.

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust offers leadership and improvement training to all new staff to the Trust; this training programme has been designed to support our leaders in developing their understanding of leadership and management skills. You will be expected to attend the leadership development programme, and the Quality Improvement Programme that the Trust delivers. This programme aims to:

  • Practitioner level in quality improvement, equipping you with the skills to champion, lead and complete quality improvement within your role

After you complete this four and a half days of training you will be able to explore further leadership and improvement training opportunities, we offer further in-house courses dependent upon your role and bitesize programmes and leadership apprenticeships at level 3,5 and 7
