We have an exciting opportunity, following recent funding, to develop the speech and language therapy service within the specialist area of spinal cord injury.

We are looking to appoint an experienced, highly motivated and flexible Speech and Language Therapist to lead the development of this new post across South Tees NHS Foundation Trust.

The Golden Jubilee regional spinal cord injuries centre at The James Cook University Hospital provides care for patients with new and existing spinal cord injuries. The service covers patients residing from the Scottish border south, to Barrow in the west and Whitby in the east, caring for patients from the day of their injury.

The successful candidate will have significant experience of working with acute dysphagia and managing communication disorders.

Evidence of advanced post graduate dysphagia training is also essential.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the role include;

  • Undertaking a leading role in planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating the Speech & Language Therapy Service to the Regional Spinal Injuries Unit.
  • Ensuring delivery of highly specialist management of acute dysphagia and communication disorders for patients with complex needs secondary to spinal cord impairments.
  • To actively participate in the well-established multi-disciplinary team meetings and work collaboratively on service developments, audit and research.
  • To provide clinical supervision and training to junior therapists and support workers within the Speech and Language Therapy team
  • To support delivery of training and development of other health care professions and support workers within the centre and the Trust.

You can expect to take an active part in service improvement, clinical governance and continuing professional development, including supporting the development of our junior staff. You will also be supported by our experienced team of therapists, therapy assistants and clerical support, which is based in our office at The James Cook University Hospital.

About us

The Golden Jubilee centre is supported by the spinal surgical service and a level-one trauma centre together with interventional radiology and complete range of other specialities. It has its own high dependency unit (HDU) where spinal cord injured patients requiring ventilation can be supported. Rehabilitation is carried out with dedicated facilities in the centre by a specialist team working across many specialities.

The Adult Speech & Language Therapy Service provides specialist communication and dysphagia input for acquired disorders into The James Cook University Hospital, Redcar Primary Care Hospital, East Cleveland Primary Care Hospital, The Friarage Hospital and the South Tees community locality. The James Cook University Hospital is a large teaching hospital that includes the specialties of Acute Stroke, Cardiothoracic, ENT, Head & Neck Cancer, Maxillo Facial Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuro-rehabilitation and Neuro-oncology, plus the Regional Spinal Injuries Unit. The Trust also hosts the Middlesbrough MND Care Centre.
