Consultant in Palliative Medicine
This job is now closed
Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Palliative Medicine consultants to join a dynamic, integrated service in Teesside and North Yorkshire. This is an expansion of the existing consultant body aiming to strengthen an established and experienced team in support of its vision for the future.
South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust warmly welcomes applications for two posts, one partial replacement and one new, to support and help develop Specialist Palliative Care (SPC) provision across the area and to progress the implementation of the South Tees End of Life Strategy. Following an open consultative review process involving current SPC trainees and new consultants, the job plans have been extensively revised and developed to account for more flexible ways of working. There is a non-resident on-call commitment that currently attracts a category B supplement supporting a 7-day SPC CNS service across the locality. Applications are encouraged from those wishing to work part time, and from those expected to gain CCT in Palliative Medicine within 6 months. A relocation package is available.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidates will join a team that offers specialist palliative care support and end of life care provision to patients across two acute hospital sites in Middlesbrough (The James Cook University Hospital) and Northallerton (Friarage Hospital), and their surrounding semi-urban and rural communities in Teesside and North Yorkshire. Our diverse population inhabits a unique and varied part of the country surrounded by coastline and national parks. From a base in The James Cook University Hospital the new post-holders will work with existing SPC consultants at The James Cook University Hospital, Teesside Hospice and in the Middlesbrough and Redcar Cleveland Community SPC service. There is recruitment in process for a Nurse Consultant in SPC to work alongside the Lead Nurse for Cancer and Palliative Care and these roles are a key part of our leadership strategy for delivering and enhancing palliative care for our patients. The Trust has a well-established integrated SPC MDT since 2014, with close collaborative working across the Acute, Community and Teesside Hospice SPC services. There is also a weekly MDTM to support smooth and effective communication and the management of complex patients as they move between settings.
About us
We are at an exciting phase in the specialist palliative care services journey in our trust, with new models developing to put modern day integrated working at the heart of what we do. This is an opportunity to be part of a rapidly transforming service in a clinically led trust.
These posts offer exciting opportunities for enthusiastic candidates wishing to develop their skills and interests in a fully supported environment, i.e. to develop skills around research and education, and/or areas of specialist interest, and to get involved with the teaching of medical students through Newcastle and Sunderland University Medical Schools. A Senior Leadership Development program is available. There are established close working links with Consultants in Respiratory Medicine and Neurology with specific interests in Palliative Care, and opportunities for closer working with colleagues in Critical Care, Front of House, other GIM specialties such as cardiology and gastroenterology, and within the James Cook Cancer Institute.
