Job summary

The NHS Long-Term Plan has a key focus on improving care for children and young people with severe obesity. As part of the Children and Young People's Transformation Programme we are establishing a new service for the treatment and support of complications related to excess weight (CEW).

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Assistant Psychologist to join a newly formed multidisciplinary team designed to deliver holistic care to patients who are severely obese. Our ideal candidate will be motivated and enthusiastic, and will work closely with the Clinical Psychologist to deliver psychological aspects of care within the paediatric multi-disciplinary service. They will work closely with a wider multi-disciplinary team to support and develop psychological understanding of patients' presenting difficulties through consultation, supervision and support, providing interventions for patients and their families.

The post holder will have excellent communication skills and will have demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team. Above all you must be passionate about working with Children and Young People, using drive and innovation to make positive changes for this specific patient group.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide, under supervision, psychological input to the complications of excess weight clinic (CEW) for children ensuring effective, caring and compassionate services to patients.
  • To be involved in the development of research, audit and evaluation aspects of the CEW programme,
  • To co-design and deliver psycho-education groups and individual programmes with children and young people and their families
  • To work with other CEW team members to develop individualised programmes of support and to deliver these as required under supervision whether at NHS sites or in external and community settings such as home or school.
  • To work with other CEW team members to develop resources for use in the project
  • To work with other CEW team members to build links with appropriate community groups and other relevant local contacts to enable better sign posting and joint working.
  • To be accountable for his/her own professional actions as an Assistant Psychologist.
  • To work independently according to a plan agreed with a qualified psychologist and within the overall framework of the team's policies and procedures
  • To abide by the NHS values and the Constitution

The Friarage Hospital in Northallerton is an essential part of our organisation and an important point of delivery for the community. It is one of the smallest district general hospitals in the country and has 189 inpatient beds.
