An exciting opportunity to join a supportive team in leading the patient safety processes within Paediatrics and Neonates. As the Lead for patient safety, the post holder will work as part of the multidisciplinary team in the on-going provision and development of patient safety within the service to enhance the provision of care for neonates, children and young people.

Main duties of the job

The Patient safety lead will be responsible for ensuring the management and co-ordination of the monitoring and promotion of patient safety across the services, including both The James Cook University Hospital (JCUH) and Friarage Hospital, Northallerton (FHN), integrating the Directorate's objectives with those of the wider Trust.

The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough is a designated major trauma centre and provides all its specialties from one site which is unique for a hospital of its size. It provides a wide range of district general hospital services and specialist services such as neurosciences, renal medicine, spinal injuries, major trauma, cardiothoracics, vascular surgery and cancer services. It has 1,024 beds, a 24-hour acute admissions unit and an emergency department which houses the major trauma centre for Durham, East Cleveland, Tees Valley and North Yorkshire and has its own helipad. In 2012 the Middlesbrough hospital completed a £35 million redevelopment of its cancer services and is now proud to provide some of the best facilities in Europe. The James Cook University Hospital has a modern, central operating suite containing 20 well-equipped theatres and a 16-bedded intensive care unit. There is also an Institute of Learning, Research and Innovation on site, embracing postgraduate medical education, undergraduate teaching centre, nurse training school, the school of radiography and library facilities.

The Friarage Hospital in Northallerton is an essential part of our organisation and an important point of delivery for the community. It is one of the smallest district general hospitals in the country and has 189 inpatient beds.

  • RSCN or equivalent NHS experience in a patient safety role
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Excellent IT skills

Desirable

  • RCA/ SI/ Datix training

Knowledge/Skills

Essential

  • Understanding of national and local risk management and patient safety standards and procedures
  • Computer literate - ability to use Word/Excel/Powerpoint, etc.
  • Report writing / Presentation skills

Experience

  • Significant experience working within the NHS
  • Experience of clinical audit and using outcome measures

Desirable

  • Experience in the investigation of incidents and conducting RCA's
