Job summary

This role is offered on a permanent basis. The hours are full-time, 37.5 hours per week.

The role is centred upon working within Gloucestershire's Integrated Sexual Health (ISH) service and the Pregnancy Advisory Service (PAS). ISH is a hub and spoke model whilst PAS is based at our hub (Hope House). To provide confidential and consistent contraception and sexual health services within nurse led clinics and alongside medical colleagues.

Working as an Independent Practitioner, the role requires professional leadership - acting as a role model to junior staff and treating patients within Sexual Health, as well as acting as the Senior Nurse at clinics when required and deputising in the absence of the Lead Nurse.

Main duties of the job

  • Work according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines, taking responsibility for the assessment of care and health education needs.
  • To take charge of clinics and to ensure the continuity of the day to day management of the service.
  • Participate in and run nurse-led clinics (to include assessment and diagnosis). Use professional judgment to seek advice or refer to medical colleagues as clinically indicated.
  • To provide a range of nursing skills within the Pregnancy Advisory Service to include the termination suite, Integrated Sexual Health clinics and outlying locality clinics, these skills will include (but not limited to) examination, microscopy, venepuncture, consent for terminations etc. This will include some evenings and possibly weekends.
  • To support, monitor and nurse patients attending for termination of pregnancy.
  • To perform ultrasound scanning for the assessment of patients in pregnancy advisory and complex contraception (if qualified to do so), or be prepared to undertake training to do so.

Identifying the needs of the patient using a professional non-judgemental approach, respecting their views and values, accepting responsibility to run clinics as requested by the Band 7 lead.

Triage patients and assess those requiring routine or urgent treatment within an agreed clinic protocol and care pathway.

Participate and run Nurse led clinics to assess individual patient needs and requirements, without supervision. Planning, implementing, and evaluating relevant programmes of care for individual patients aligned with national and local guidance, using professional judgement to seek advice or refer to medical colleagues as required.

Undertake a full range of symptomatic screening procedures in both male and female patients, whilst being responsible for the equipment used.

To provide the full range of nursing interventions, within the specific competency framework for the Pregnancy Advisory Service, providing non directive support, and care for patients attending for termination of pregnancy.

To provide ultrasound scanning assessment for patients attending the Pregnancy Advisory Service or the Complex Contraception Clinic.

Provide Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) options for service users by the fitting and removal of LARC devices.

Administer and record medication, including Patient Group Directions (PGD) and repeat prescriptions, in accordance with service policy and following Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) professional guidelines.

Communicate expertly with patients in ways that empower them to make informed choices about their sexual health, being sensitive to issues of age, sexuality, ethnicity, spirituality, cultural needs and socio-economic status, with the aim of minimising their risk of acquiring STIs & Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

To work within Fraser Guidelines regarding the provision of care for patients under 16 years of age. To assess Fraser competence and be aware of the referral pathways for safeguarding children and ensure follow up completed.
