Job summary

Have you had lived experience of Birth Trauma or Loss? Would you like to support other women who are currently experiencing perinatal mental health issues? If so, we would like to hear from you as we have an exciting opportunity, to become a perinatal peer support worker, in the perinatal mental health team.

The Gloucestershire Birth Anxiety and Trauma Service (BATS) is part of the wider Perinatal Community Mental Health Team. The service provides mental health support and services for women and their families during pregnancy and up to 2 years after birth and BATS specialises in helping women who have a severe fear of childbirth, have experienced birth as traumatic or have experienced loss of a baby.

The team prioritises women with serious and complex mental health needs and/or high levels of distress linked to their maternity experience including those who have experienced serious mental health episodes in the past and are currently well.

We also provide specialist consultation, training, and advice to a range of mental health, maternity, and primary health services.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit a compassionate, positive thinking individual with lived experience of mental health problems linked to their maternity experience. The successful candidate will have completed or be wiling to complete a Peer Support Worker training.

As part of the Perinatal team the post holder will provide practical, individual and group support to mothers within the service, using their own lived experience and role modelling to enhance the therapeutic relationship and enable mothers to achieve their individual recovery goals.

You will be a member of a multidisciplinary team working alongside mental health professionals. Peer Support Workers are fully supported in their role through regular 1 to 1 supervision within the team line management structure. You will also have access to training opportunities to support your professional development.

You will receive direct supervision and partake in reflective practice / training on a regular basis and be required to meet the Care Certificate standards. All successful applicants will also have the opportunity to discuss the prospect of undertaking a Level 3 Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship alongside their substantive post. This apprenticeship would include the Level 3 Diploma in Clinical Healthcare.
