Job responsibilities
To be responsible for carrying out evidence based assessment, intervention and evaluation of occupational performance needs of patients/service users and adults with physical disabilities. You will assess, provide advice, provide appropriate standard or specialist equipment, refer on for minor adaptations and liaise with the borough councils and housing associations in relation to major adaptations.
To be competent in risk assessments and managing risk autonomously within the home environment, together with moving and handling assessments.
To advise other professional groups on moving and handling issues, e.g. district nurses, carers.
To liaise with partner agencies to ensure service user access to environmental adaptations via the Disabled Facilities Grant process. To design, plan and monitor environmental adaptations. To be competent in major adaptations.
To manage a diverse caseload of service users with wide ranging and complex levels of need, including conditions such as orthopaedic, medical, neurological and palliative care.
To understand the nature, aetiology and expected progression of a wide variety of diseases/disabilities and to plan appropriate interventions accordingly.
To understand the psychological aspects and the sociological impact of disease/disability on the service user and carers.
To apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training, advice on lifestyle changes and adaptations to the physical, psychological and social environment to meet the occupational performance needs of the service user.
To plan and implement individual interventions by setting goals in collaboration with the service user, using a range of rehabilitation approaches to achieve occupational performance goals.
To enable service users and carers to safely carry out necessary occupations thereby enabling the individual to be as independent as possible and to remain in their own home.
To advise colleagues and undertake joint visits as appropriate.
To attend appropriate specialist courses and provide cascade training to colleagues in your workplace.
To monitor and support supervisees e.g. Occupational Therapy Assistants, students, in prioritising their workload to make the best use of resources.

To excel in this role, you will require excellent communication skills, the courage to make clinical decisions and a willingness to develop your potential. You will require current HCPC registration, post-registration experience is helpful but not essential and we have an excellent preceptorship programme for newly qualified Occupational Therapists.

This post requires the post holder to be able to undertake all statutory and mandatory training and post holders must be able to undertake physical interventions. Fitness for physical intervention will be assessed by Occupational Health.
