Job summary
GHC Trust is seeking a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist to join the team at Avon House, our community mental health hub in Stroud. This would be working alongside Dr Maya Biju, Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist. The post has become vacant due to the relocation of the post holder abroad.
Avon House is the mental health hub serving Cheltenham, Tewkesbury and the North Cotswolds. As well as the Community Mental Health Team for Older People, the local Recovery Team is also based at Avon House. The Community Dementia Nursing team, Memory Assessment Service and Care Home Support Team are all based on the Charlton Lane Hospital site in Cheltenham and maintain very close links with the team at Avon House.
Main duties of the job
The 0.8 wte appointment is for a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist to work with the Community Mental Health Team for Older People at Avon House. The post holder will cover the Tewkesbury and North Cotswold part of the sector, with Dr Biju covering Cheltenham.
The post holder will be professionally accountable to the Medical Director and operational responsibility will lie with the Deputy Medical Director (Operations) and the Medical Lead for Old Age Psychiatry.
In the role, you will provide senior medical advice, support, consultancy and clinical leadership to the Community Mental Health Team and the Community Dementia Nurse and Care Home Support Team for the sector. In addition, the post holder provides advice and input to the community hospital mental health liaison nurses covering Tewkesbury Hospital and the North Cotswold Hospital.

To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between medical colleagues and the medical director in accordance with the Trusts personnel policies and procedures. This may include assessing competences under the Modernising Medical Careers framework.
To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively and submit this promptly to the Information Department.
To participate in annual appraisal for consultants.
To attend and participate in the academic programme of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.
To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval (if applicable) and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
To participate annually in a job plan review with the clinical manager, which will include consultation with a relevant manager in order to ensure that the post is developed to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernisation.
To work with local managers and professional colleagues to ensure the efficient running of services, and share with other consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
To comply with all Trust policies including Equal Opportunities policies and to promote equality of access to healthcare at all times.
To participate in continuing medical education and maintain good standing for Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD. Consultants are expected to become members of a peer group and will be signposted to the appropriate group on appointment.
The post holder will be encouraged to develop an area of special clinical interest in line with service needs.
On-Call Arrangements
The consultant will join the consultant emergency on-call rota on a pro rata basis. This is a joint rota covering all age ranges and mental health specialties in the Trust. The full time rota is currently a 1 in 20, with alternating 1st and 2nd on call arrangements. The 1st on call provides cover 9am-9pm and is then available to the 2nd on call consultant if required (due to pressure of work) from 9pm until 9am the following morning. The 2nd on call is available to help the first on call between 9am-9pm rota if needed and will be the first to be called overnight. On call attracts a payment of 0.25 PA (pro rata). Weekends are split into individual days. Section 12 cover is provided with on-call duties under an arrangement with the local CCG for which a 0.25 PA retainer (pro rata) is payable, plus MHA fees.
There are regularly ST4-6 trainees on the rota who become the first on call.
