This is a new opportunity & is based at East Surrey Hospital ( part of the SASH Trust) predominantly. You will be assessing & treating young people presenting in acute hospital & will interface with the acute Paediatric team, Paediatric & Adult Psychiatric Liaison Services, our Crisis Intervention Service & Hope service. .

The HOPE service delivers day & intensive community treatment services for young people aged 11 - 18. The remit of the HOPE Service is to reduce or prevent the possibility of Tier 4 care through early intervention & help with stability at home & school where necessary. The HOPE Service deals with children who are too complex or need more frequent input than would be available on an outpatient basis only.

You would be expected to be involved in the strategic development of this service & to participate in operational & business planning alongside Senior Leadership colleagues.

Main duties of the job

You will be providing clinical expertise & leadership to acute Paediatric colleagues & with our Adult Psychiatric Liaison Service

You will be working alongside the Paediatric Liaison Nurses & the Crisis Intervention Nurses either in the ED or Paediatric Ward each day.

This role is to provide RC cover for any young person who is detained to the acute hospital under the MHA while an appropriate inpatient MH placement is sought regardless of geographical home address. This provides a new opportunity to work alongside not only SABP colleagues but the West Sussex teams to devise pathways & warm transfers of care when a young person is ready for discharge from the acute or when the young person is waiting for an appropriate care placement or T4 facility.

You will be co-located with your adult Consultant Psychiatrist for Adult Psychiatric Liaison who also provides this for over 18s & you will have the full support of the CYPS Division & the AD for Crisis Pathway.

Our CIS GM & Team are very experienced and will be there to assist any navigation or queries you may have. The Paediatric Liaison Nurses are currently employed by SASH however this is an opportunity to develop & shape the whole provision going forward.

Following assessment, you may be called to support medication initiation/reviews & mental health act assessments. You will be the Responsible clinician under MHA (1983, 2007) for all patients detained under the Mental Health Act in acute environments within ESH.

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act(or within 6 to 12 months of the time of interview/assessment) or equivalent
  • MB BS or equivalent recognised medical qualification
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.

Desirable

  • Relevant higher degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych or equivalent

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of legislation, Department of Health Guidance and literature and its implications for clinical practice.
  • Knowledge of NHS strategic vision in the Next Stage Review (High-Quality Care for All)
