Main duties of the job

As a Hospital Duty Manager you will provide robust clinical decision making and management to junior staff team. You will be a source of mental health knowledge and expertise, have vision and resilience to support the ward and your colleagues in keeping the ward environment safe and productive. This role is at night only, there will be the requirement to attend training during the day.

The role involves working with patients with acute and chronic mental health challenges, delivering comprehensive psychiatric assessment including risk assessment and risk management plans. There is a great emphasis on physical health care on the unit and staff receive regular training to ensure they are offering up to date interventions and feel confident to carry out care with the patients.

Good communication skills are essential to deliver effective, high quality healthcare, ensuring the ward runs effectively, this will include aspects of people management, safer staffing, support staff development, clinical supervision, clinical effectiveness underpinned by evidence based care and key performance indicators and CQC standards. The applicant must be compassionate towards both patients and staff and have an open and honest presence.

Job responsibilities

My job makes better lives by providing 24/7 operational cover for Inpatients, including the PICU, Rehabilitation and Bed Management. The role will work in partnership with the clinical leads for the safe operation of the services and timely admission of patients requiring inpatient admission. This role will include coordinating safe and effective services and providing responses to incidents.

Job Overview

To provide operational cover across the wards and rehabilitation services.

To provide leadership out of hours and effectively coordinate safe services

To support Bed management out of hours and weekends to support the bed flow ensure admissions and discharges out of hours are safe and effective.

Sound experience of operating effectively as a team lead in a health and social care setting for a minimum of 2 years at Band 6, in inpatient services would be an advantage.

Suitable for someone who is passionate and committed to work operationally supporting teams and people who use our services and enjoys managing operational challenges

Key Responsibilities

To ensure oversight of timely admission and discharge pathways for patients out of hours.

To support bed management with admission out of hours.

To work with the ward staff and senior leaders to ensure that safe, effective, and high care is delivered, and that staff are moved across services to ensure the wards have an appropriate skill mix.

To evaluate safety across the site by assessing staffing levels, past incidents, and risk issues. Provide and demonstrate clinical leadership and management to the clinical services and response team.

To manage administrative and operational resources in a cost-effective manner. To co-ordinate effective working with teams and services across the site, maintaining excellent communication and working relationships with all team members, and other services.

To carry out nursing procedures to a standard that ensures safe and effective care and complies with The Nursing and Midwifery Council's Code of Professional Conduct.

Ensure clinical practice follows both National and Trust policies, protocols and standards.

Provide informal teaching and modelling, demonstrating good practice. Support all clinical services with admissions.

To provide support for all services on site. The post holder will provide leadership to all members of the response team.

To co-ordinate effective working with teams and services across the site, maintaining excellent communication and working relationships with all team members, and other services.

To work flexibly to cover the HDM Rota on site 24/7 (night shifts)

To support with the booking of shifts, including liaising with Ward Managers and ward staff to ensure there are no gaps in provision wherever possible

To work in partnership with the Ward Managers and Clinical Nurse Specialists to provide supervision and appraisals to staff working in inpatients.

To work closely with the Clinical Service Lead to identify clinical and operational issues that relate to emergency response and to ensure they are clearly communicated to all staff.

To manage the response team members when responding to incidents.

To respond and support any incidents on site which involve members of the public.

To work with Ward Managers and the Senior Management team to ensure learning takes place from incidents on site.

To escalate concerns around clinical practice or operational issues to the Clinical Service Leads.

Overview of acute pathway bed capacity and level of acuity.

Provide leadership in liaising with emergency services where required

Close collaborative working with the Facilities dept. on a shift-by-shift basis.

Provide support and clinical input into the safety huddles.

Support and facilitate simulation exercises.

Conduct seclusion reviews as required by policy. Provide leadership in the decision making regarding the on-going seclusion of service users and plans to reduce this restrictive intervention.

Provide a single point of contact for escalation of issues to the on-call service manager.

To work in partnership with people who use services and families/carers.

Provide and demonstrate leadership in the management of ward teams as required (outside of normal working hours).

Provide advice and guidance in the management of clinical issues that arise out of hours.

Be confident in the management of medical emergency procedures as outlined in the Resuscitation and Medically Deteriorating Patient Policy (2015) and in line with Immediate Life Support training.

Provide access to the out of hours pharmacy cupboard.

Be aware of the local procedures for accessing and stocking medical emergency supplies.

To work within policy, professional and legal frameworks at all times. This requires advanced knowledge of NMC Code of Professional Conduct, risk assessment and child protection protocols, Mental Health Act and CPA, and Trust policies.

To be up to date with all statutory and mandatory training as directed by the trust.

This role is night shifts only, however you will be required to attend statutory and mandatory training which will be during the day.
