Job summary

We are looking for a highly dedicated nurse, occupational therapist or social worker to join our Liaison Psychiatry Service at East Surrey Hospital, Surrey. Our team provides a comprehensive specialist service to patients, clinicians and carers in the general hospital setting. The team has PLAN accreditation as such you will be joining an already established and cohesive team.

The team is CORE 24, you will be expected to work a shift system across a 24hr period seven days a week, primarily assessing patients who are referred from our inpatient wards or those who present to the Emergency Department.

This is a challenging but rewarding role, offering an exciting opportunity to nurses, occupational therapists or social workers who have strong assessment and therapeutic skills. Previous experience of working in Liaison Psychiatry and across ages is desirable, although not essential. We offer excellent staff support through clinical supervision and teamwork.

You will have an excellent and positive approach to work, with an outstanding, demonstrable background of providing high quality care. You will have an insight into liaison psychiatry and the national guidelines impacting these services. You will have experience and willingness to teach and educate others within the team and the wider network as well as a commitment to service development and the best possible outcomes for people in the acute hospital setting.

Main duties of the job

  • To co-ordinate and monitor the delivery of person centred healthcare
  • To be responsible for the full assessment of the biopsychosocial needs of those patients
  • To be responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of robust discharge plans
  • To work as a member of the MDT
  • To act in a manner to respect the customs, individuality, values, sexuality and spiritual beliefs
  • To create, develop and maintain professional supportive relationships with all members of staff, with other professionals and agencies to enhance recovery
  • To act as role model in providing a service for people with mental health problems within the general hospital setting
  • To accurately record all contacts with service users in case notes in line with SABP record keeping policy
  • To understand the range of risks potentially faced by the service user group
  • To undertake risk assessments and management strategies in line with trust and local policies
  • To recognize potential crisis situations and act responsively and responsibly to resolve the situation, seeking assistance if required
  • To take all possible precautions to safeguard the welfare and safety of staff, service users, visitors and the public, by implementing all policies related to health, safety, security and risk

  • 2 years experience post qualification which should include independent assessment skills i.e. CMHRS duty, HTT assessment, liaison assessment or similar. Aware of personal and professional boundaries would be desirable. Suitable for someone who is passionate about ensuring a high quality holistic approach to the care and support provided to people with mental health difficulties in a general hospital.
