Job summary

Appletree Day Nursery are looking for an amazing Group Leader to motivate and drive a team of practitioners.

Job Overview

To lead and work as part of a team supporting the delivery of services to children aged 3 months to 5 years. Providing simulating and educational environments both indoors and outdoors, dependent on the childrens age and stages of development. Whilst focusing on a specific group of children the role requires the flexibility to work with all children in the nursery.

This role is full time working a 4-day week

Main duties of the job

As part of this role you will act as a key person to named children and families and oversee all childrens development within the room. To provide robust reports/documentations on childrens development needs in line with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and childrens outcomes, liaising with the management team and relevant authorities and external professionals as appropriate.

This role will lead a group within the nursery and the practitioners within the group, role-modelling best practice and sharing ideas/strategies with members of the team to address needs and requirements to achieve best outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Group Leader:

To promote best practice on all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage through professional role modeling.

To take ownership of the groups administration to include children development records and groups records, working closely with the nursery management team.

To support, mentor and model child development to other practitioners and parents/carers, through working in partnership and empowering all to undertake activities matched to the developmental needs of the child, setting long-term, short-term goals and achievable small steps.

To take ownership of the groups supervision, health and safety and accountability of all the children, practitioners, equipment and environment.

To work in partnership with multi-agency professional to support all involved.

To communicate effectively between the nursery manager/management team and practitioners ensuring all staff are given feedback of any appropriate information.

General:

To re-assure, support, and communicate with the children in a professional and caring manner.

To ensure the children are appropriately fed and rested to meet their individual needs.

To promote positive behaviour and good communication with the children to raise their self-esteem and confidence.

To raise any concerns noticed regarding childrens behavior/play or any issues that may be linked to safeguarding following the nursery policy.

To ensure the childrens environment is welcoming by keeping it clean, tidy and safe, including ensuring work surfaces and floors are kept clean and dirt-free for all to include children, parents and visitors.

To ensure the children are toileted and/or changed regularly so that they are clean and comfortable throughout the day.

To undertake the principal duties of a Nursery Nurse.

To ensure that new children, parents and staff are welcomed and settled well. To collect all relevant information and show to the Managers.

To engage in planning and devising an educational care programme for individual children that promotes learning and development complying fully with the Early Years Foundation Stage.

To be confident in developing excellent working relationships with parents, liaising regularly and informing them of any daily occurrences, learning and development about their child.

To manage, motivate, and delegate efficiently within a team.

To run group meetings, producing agendas and minutes, and to be able to delegate tasks to staff, communicate constructive criticism, as well as positive praise and comments.

  • To be knowledgeable in special educational needs and disability (Code of Practice).

To be able to accept constructive criticism from the Nursery Manager and colleague and learn from it by improving the service.

To act as a responsible professional person for the Nursery in the absence of the Nursery Manager and Deputy Manager.

To fulfil general office administration such as answering the telephone, using the computer, photocopying, laminating, and to take on extra duties / jobs / responsibilities.

To induct new staff into the room ensuring that they are aware of all of their responsibilities and supervise and support students whilst on placement at the nursery.

To plan and lead the group when out on outings/trips, keeping all safe and educating the children when outside of nursery premises, whilst meeting their individual needs.

To be accountable for all of the children and staff in the room.

To keep medicine, accident and register books up-to-date, and to give medication / first aid where appropriate and record.

To create an order of all provisions, toys, equipment, art & craft materials, etc., for the room.

To work according to the statutory requirements and promote childrens learning through the Early Years Foundation Stage

To undertake some of the roles and responsibilities which are shared out amongst the Group Leaders; for example, management of staff shifts

Designated Safeguarding Lead ((DSL), Health and Safety Audits

To engage in all physical aspects of the children (I. e lifting, running, bending, sitting on the floor and small chairs)

To attend regular team meetings with the Nursery Manager to discuss general Nursery Issues/training within and out of normal nursery hours.

To attend regular appraisal and supervision meetings to discuss personal development, appraisal and supervision with the Nursery Manager.

To undertake any other duties at the request of the line manager which are relevant with the role, including project work, internal job rotation and absence cover.

To always follow all trust and nursery policies and procedures

To participate and undertake in all statutory/mandatory training, including first aid, moving and handling, safeguarding children, fire safety and food hygiene.
