Job summary

This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly skilled, innovative, and experienced Clinical Neuropsychologist to play a lead role in the strategic development and delivery of Neuropsychology across our community and in-patient Working Age Adult Mental Health Recovery Services.

With increasing recognition of the significant role that neurodiversity plays in people’s recovery from mental health difficulties, this newly developed post will be pivotal in ensuring that people using our services have access to appropriate and timely neuropsychological assessments, and that staff across our services have the skills and confidence to incorporate people’s neurodiversity into their care and risk planning.

You will be working collaboratively with senior colleagues to support delivery and ongoing development of services in line with the ambitions set out in the NHS Long-term plan, our ICS mental health delivery plans and the Trust’s Strategy. Your own caseload will involve work with clients with highly complex mental health and neuropsychological needs, including assessment, formulation, highly skilled direct and indirect interventions.

Main duties of the job

· Providing clinical and strategic leadership on the delivery of neuropsychological assessments and interventions across working age adult mental health services

· Delivering high quality neuropsychology assessments, interventions, and consultation, to people with developmental and acquired neuropsychological needs.

· Ensure neuropsychology assessments and interventions are evidence-based, safe, effective and operate within professional standards, developing processes for monitoring and maintaining these standards.

· Supporting the development of skills and competencies of community and in-patient staff in understanding and incorporating people’s neurodiversity in care and risk planning.

· Support the Trust in achieving its clinical strategy, as well as meeting relevant objectives of our ICS plans.

Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is the leading provider of health and social care services for people of all ages with mental ill-health and learning disabilities in Surrey and North East Hampshire. We also provide social care services for people with a learning disability in Croydon and ASD and ADHD assessment services in Hampshire.

We actively seek to engage people who use our services and our communities in improving the mental wellbeing of the local population. We work closely with other NHS and voluntary sector organisations who provide services and support people who use services and carers.

We have a small team of neuropsychologists working in older people’s mental health/dementia services, community neuropsychology/stroke services and general hospital neurology department. We also have a specialist neurodevelopmental service, strong links with neuropsychologists across partner NHS Trusts and a close relationship to the Clinical Psychology Training Course at the University of Surrey.

Surrey is a beautiful county lying just 30 minutes away from Central London and from the South Coast.

Our historic market towns and bustling districts are enveloped in wonderful countryside, and our excellent road and rail networks bring the rest of the country within easy reach.

For international travel, both Gatwick and Heathrow airports are nearby.

Job responsibilities

My job makes better lives by promoting psychological and physical well-being and independence for people with neuropsychological conditions by providing clinical and strategic leadership on the development of neuropsychology across working age adult mental health services; delivering neuropsychology assessments, interventions and consultation within a person-centered framework; providing clinical supervision and guidance to neuropsychologists, psychologists and to other staff within our services. These roles will be undertaken within an accessible, non-stigmatizing service that contributes to the specialist health care of people using the service.

Job Overview

The post holder will be expected to work flexibly within all services, as the need arises. The main base for this post is negotiable but travel across the SABP footprint will be expected.

Responsible to: Associate Director of Therapies

Suitable for someone who is passionate about ensuring a high quality, holistic approach to the care and support provided to people with neuropsychological difficulties.

Key Responsibilities

· To maintain high standards of care in all areas of own practice in accordance with the HCPC Code of Conduct, professional guidelines and Trust Policies and Procedures and be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own clinical work and care.

· In collaboration with senior leads within the division, plan and deliver a highly specialist clinical neuropsychology service and to oversee its clinical governance.

· To be responsible for the professional leadership, strategic oversight and continued development of the service.

· To ensure that all psychology staff receive regular, high-quality supervision and Individual performance review/appraisals.

· To ensure that the healthcare needs of people coming under the care of the service are communicated to service commissioners and providers. Working in partnership with acute and primary care services and other healthcare providers to improve access to psychological therapies

· To play a key role in identifying and developing opportunities for psychology to contribute to the Trust delivering its clinical strategy and ICS’s in delivering local plans.

· To lead on appropriate staff recruitment within the Psychology service and contribute to wider strategic plans regarding psychology recruitment.

· To demonstrate highly-specialist expertise and specialist psychological skills such as specialist neuropsychological assessments, formulation, therapeutic interventions and consultation to support people with specific needs meeting the criteria for the service

· To actively involve people in developing and agreeing their own care plan, to act as an advocate and ensure that there is proper regard for their dignity, choice, self-esteem, age, racial, cultural, sexual and religious needs and preferences.

· To undertake comprehensive risk assessments and develop effective risk management plans.

· To act within the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act (2005).

· To act as practice assessor/supervisor/teacher in teaching, facilitating and supporting pre- registration students and junior personnel and to participate in the audit of educational placements. To participate in new staff induction.

· To act as lead supervisor for staff undergoing DoN registration training

· To research national best practice and ensure practice against nationally recognised standards.

· To take a lead role in identifying and managing clinical audit and research opportunities within the service, maintaining current knowledge of research findings and development within the health psychology field.
